Because one wants to achieve something, a famine of meditation arises. Furthermore, if one merely identifies settling the mind in a state of comfortable ease as meditation, then this is not grasped by superior seeing (vipassanā). Even if it is grasped, all appearances must be rejected, and even if they are not rejected, they rise up like enemies, so it is no small matter. Furthermore, if one does not bring to mind any thoughts of the three times, and considers the empty, hollow state as meditation, then this is also not grasped by superior seeing, and it is a great fault of blocking appearances. Even if it is grasped, it is no small matter because one does not want appearances and thoughts. Furthermore, if one cultivates whatever appears and arises without separating from the clinging to non-truth, considering it as meditation, then this is faulty because it is grasping at non-existence. Furthermore, if one considers not engaging in acceptance or rejection of all appearances without mindfulness as meditation, then this is abiding in equanimity, which is just dullness. I have not seen these as Great Seal (Mahāmudrā) meditation, although each has its own way of accumulating merit. Furthermore, if one considers only non-thought in a clear, bright mind as meditation, then even if thoughts naturally subside and awareness is clear and without identification, it can be considered meditation, but it is one-sided because it seems that non-thought is absolutely necessary. Similarly, when conceptual thoughts arise, cutting off their continuation and settling into a clear, non-thinking state is also one-sided, because neither movement nor appearance has been definitively settled. Furthermore, if one makes mindfulness sharp and considers only the clear, empty, and bare mind as meditation, then that itself is meditation, but because one does not want the natural, vast state of mindfulness to be relaxed, one has not found relaxation and is too tense, which is one-sided. Therefore, it is extremely important to distinguish between what is and is not meditation. Although one-sided meditation has the quality of progressing upwards, there is a risk of becoming weary of meditation and bored because of unskilled cultivation. Therefore, on the level of appearances, emptiness, abiding, and movement, one needs a state that is easy to cultivate, where one has certainty and recognition through various degrees of tension and relaxation. Secondly, not being distracted from ordinary awareness is called meditation. Ordinary awareness is simply the natural state of the mind as it is. If one imposes acceptance, rejection, or corrections on it, it is no longer ordinary awareness. Therefore, whatever the natural state of the mind is, whatever appears, whatever arises, cultivating it without being distracted by self-aware mindfulness is merely given the name of cultivating meditation.
