Allow any visual appearance to arise clearly, and examine its origin, dwelling, and cessation as before. Are the visual appearance and the mind two separate entities or one? If they are separate, do they exist mutually, or internally and externally, or above and below? If they exist in that way, do they exist as independently established entities, or merely as appearances within the mind? If they are merely appearances within the mind, then examine whether there is only one mind, or multiple conflicting minds. If the visual appearance and the mind are one, then examine and experience whether the mind has become the visual appearance and become one, or whether the visual appearance has become the mind and become one, and so on. If there is a misconception, dispel the obstructing factors and point out the direction: Whatever visual appearance arises, ascertain that it is merely an aspect of the mind's appearance. Although various forms of visual appearances arise, experience them as emptiness of appearance, without any established essence that can be identified. Because the mind's potential is unceasing, recognize that it is merely appearing as forms such as visual appearances. It is necessary to determine that visual appearances are not entirely external, and the mind is not entirely internal, but that appearance and mind are inseparable. For example, as explained above, or in a dream, although various external visual appearances arise, they do not go beyond the dream's awareness, and the dream's visual appearances and the dream's awareness are inseparable. Temporarily, objects that appear due to common karma appear as various different forms due to external conditions. For example, just as a clear crystal appears as blue, etc., when it encounters blue, etc., external conditions, but its essence does not become anything other than the clear crystal itself. From the mind whose door is not closed, until it is purified, if it encounters various external conditions, it merely appears as various forms, but it is necessary to determine that its essence does not become anything other than the mind, and thereby generate the experience of ascertaining that all appearances are the mind. Similarly, examine conflicting appearances such as beauty and ugliness as before. Using visual appearance as an example, examine and gain certainty about all phenomena such as sound, smell, taste, and tactile objects. Third, maintain the body posture as before, and allow the mind to remain naturally in a state of clarity and emptiness. Then, gaze intently at it and examine it. Again, from the state of natural abiding, allow a thought to suddenly arise, and then observe it. Then, examine the origin, dwelling, and cessation of both abiding and movement, and what the difference is between their essence and what can be identified. If there is a difference between abiding and sudden arising, then

Then, examine the differences between the two themselves, such as good and bad, emptiness and non-emptiness, whether the essence is established or not, and whether they are identifiable or not. If there is no difference, examine whether there is no difference from one, or whether even if they are different, they are the same and therefore there is no difference. If it is one, examine which of the three—beginning, middle, and end—is "one." If they are the same, examine how they are the same, etc., and let them observe and experience. If there is a wrong view, prohibit bias, point out the direction, and let them examine again. It is wrong to hold that the two, co-existing and upward-moving, are different continuums. Experiencing that both are the nature of mind, the only one, rootless, unidentifiable, self-aware, self-purifying, and that the essence of clarity and emptiness is the same. Whichever of the two arises, there is no need to negate, affirm, abandon, or adopt. Abide in the place of abiding, flow in the place of flowing, and it is necessary to generate a definite understanding that it is clear and empty self-liberation. Fourth, as before, in the state of mind's clarity and emptiness, various thoughts and appearances are the unceasing skillful manifestations of this mind. Now, staring intently at what the nature of this mind is like, let them carefully observe from what cause this mind arose, how it abides, and where it ultimately goes. If there is a wrong view, prohibit bias, point out the direction, and let them examine again. Experiencing that the mind was not initially produced from causes and conditions, nor was it born from any basis, it is rootless from the beginning. It does not abide anywhere in the present shape, changes, etc., and there is nothing to identify. In the end, nothing can hinder it, existing like self-born, self-purified, self-liberated. Experiencing that from the beginning, there is no identifiable aspect of the three—birth, abiding, and cessation—just as its nature is self-aware emptiness, whatever mind arises, it cannot be adorned by good, nor can it be defiled by bad. Therefore, there is no need to modify or add to it, and it is necessary to be certain that it is self-purified, self-aware, and self-liberated. In this way, all the observations and analyses of vipassanā should be conducted and analyzed on the basis of the essential points of the body and the samadhi of the mind's clarity and emptiness, so that one can experience through the wisdom of vipassanā. If one analyzes only through the thinking of conceptual mind, only general concepts may arise, but experience will not occur. If a definite understanding is not generated about this, even if it is introduced, one will not believe it later and will turn to others. Or even if one strives to practice diligently, one will only wander in the state of śamatha, clinging to that kind of experience, and even if one strives for many years, one will not attain enlightenment.
