Cutting the root of positional change, is to decide that whatever arises is unborn. First, keep the body posture as before, and in the state of equanimity in the clear and empty mind, generate a thought, such as anger, through investigation. Stare at it intently and carefully examine what is the cause or basis upon which it arises. If you think it arises from the state of clear and empty mind itself, then examine whether it arises like a child born from a mother, or like light emanating from the sun, or whether the mind has gone into that thought, and so on. Observe how it abides. If it appears as anger, then examine whether that anger appears with strong clinging to reality based on pervasive imputation, or whether it is just an appearance of anger, like something empty without any essence to be identified. Observe how it ultimately disappears. Is the thought stopped or does it dissolve? If it is stopped, who stopped it? What caused it to be stopped? If it dissolves, does it dissolve due to conditions, or does it go to self-dissolution? Likewise, allow various subtle and coarse thoughts to be examined and analyzed as before, and observe the experience. If there is a misconception, dispel the harm and give a brief indication, then allow it to be examined again. Even though you cannot find "it arose here like this, its shape changed and stayed here, and finally disappeared here," the concepts of thought and mind being different, like inside and outside, and like body and limbs, will subside. Various thoughts, no matter what form they appear in, are experienced as appearance and emptiness, without any essence to be identified, and are recognized as self-arising and self-liberating. Because the function of the mind is not interrupted, be certain that the mind arises as thoughts or merely appears as such, and thus it is necessary to decide that thoughts and the nature of mind are inseparable, like the waves of water. Waves are not separate from water, and water itself appears as waves, and although they appear, they do not move from the nature of water. Likewise, various thoughts, from the moment they arise, are not separate from the clear and empty mind, which has no essence to be identified. And because the door of arising is not interrupted, the mind arises as various thoughts. Although they arise there, be certain that they do not move from the clear and empty mind, which has no essence to be identified. Thus, it is necessary to generate the experience of being certain that various thoughts are mind. Likewise, investigate a happy thought and a sad thought, and observe what differences there are in their essence, etc. You should also decide on opposing thoughts. Second, keep the body posture as before, and in the state of clear and empty mind
