There are two types of non-mentation: tightening and loosening. The first is: the body posture remains as before, with the gaze fixed directly ahead. Generate inner strength and tighten without a moment's distraction. Do not take this as the goal of meditation, but rather maintain a clear and focused state of mind. Do not continue for too long, relax for a moment, then tighten again, and without a moment's distraction, maintain focus, practice and observe the experience. Compared to the previous state of calmness, if the mind becomes clear, lucid, and awake, and the memory is clear, then it is a sign of progress. For some people with active minds, even if a clear state arises, but the duration is short, do not consider it a fault, do many short practices, and the clear state will gradually increase. The second is: the body posture and gaze remain as before. Do not have prejudices such as "this is meditation, this is not meditation," or "it is good to be calm, it is bad to be distracted," but relax the mind and body. Do not suppress or transform anything, let the mind relax naturally. In this state, maintain non-distracted awareness, and expand broadly in a non-forced way. If, during the expansion, coarse thoughts arise like sesame seeds, do not suppress them, nor follow them, but maintain non-distracted awareness. Do not suppress or transform subtle thoughts either. Rest a little in a clear, calm state and in intermittent relaxation. Then practice and observe the experience again as before. If, as before, you try to block coarse and subtle thoughts, artificially make awareness clear, and try to tighten the mind to one point, you will feel somewhat uncomfortable. Here, it is enough to expand naturally in a non-distracted state, and even if coarse and subtle thoughts arise, as long as you maintain awareness, the thoughts cannot function, but will naturally subside and merge into the state of calmness. If awareness pervades, there is no need for other prejudices, and a feeling of spaciousness will arise. During intermittent relaxation, the mind will also relax, become aware of the state of calmness, and thus it will be easier to practice, which is a sign of progress. If you fall into a dull state and become distracted, or if you become unconsciously distracted for any reason, it is a sign of weak awareness. If a rigid, empty, or confused state arises, it is a sign of insufficient relaxation and dull awareness.

Eliminate faults through the method of guarding and allow guarding. If the mind sinks, generate the sharpness and strength of mindfulness and awareness. If it is agitated, slightly reduce the intensity of the mind and relax more to guard it, so that the mind remains clear and serene. If appearances such as forms and sounds arise, appearing as vague, calm, disappearing, or hollow, then it is the arising of shamatha. No matter what kind of experiential differences arise, do not follow them, but temporarily meditate in a clear and serene state of non-conceptualization. If the foundation is not established here, the meditation will be biased, so the foundation must be established. First, in the midst of many subtle and gross thoughts arising in confusion, finding a small portion of remaining in non-conceptualization is the first shamatha, like a stream flowing in a ravine. Then, most of the thoughts become subtle and subside, and shamatha abides peacefully and calmly. However, if a strong movement of thoughts arises and cannot be suppressed, drowsiness and agitation will occur from time to time, which is the intermediate shamatha, like a slow-flowing river. Then, subtle and gross thoughts do not arise, and one abides in a state of non-conceptualization for as long as one can, or even if a subtle thought arises slightly, it cannot perform the function of thought, but is purified in its own place in a state of non-conceptualization, which is the ultimate shamatha, like the meeting of mother and child in the ocean. Therefore, even if the essence of Mahamudra meditation is not understood through shamatha, it is extremely important as the basis of meditation. Because it is an immeasurable samadhi that accumulates virtuous karma, one should strive to accomplish flawless and stable shamatha. Next, guiding through the door of vipassana is divided into two parts: determining the nature of various mind appearances, and cutting off superimpositions on the basis. The first part is divided into two parts: determining the nature of the root mind, and determining the nature of the function of thoughts and appearances. The first part is: the body posture is as before, the eyes are half-open and half-closed, without change, staring intently. Place the clear and serene awareness on top of the non-conceptual shamatha, and then, in that state, look nakedly at the mind itself, what kind of shape and color does it have? Where does it abide and rely on? What are its appearances and changes? Examine and analyze them in order. It appears in the shape of round, square, etc., or in the shape of earth, stone, mountain, rock, plant, etc., or in the shape of human and animal, etc.
