It is said that some people think that one should circle the palms and knees three times and complete one hundred "Segol" etc. Then, if one is only practicing Phowa, one must first accomplish any of the three types of vase breathing: superior, middling, or inferior. Then, the actual practice of Phowa is to perform the special preliminaries, visualize the Lama on the crown of the head, and pray to accomplish Phowa. Perform the seven-point posture of Vairochana, and visualize oneself as the solitary hero form of the Yidam. Within the body, as in the case of Tummo, the upper end of the central channel should be straight and pierced directly into the Brahma aperture at the crown of the head, and visualize the aperture as being wide open. Then, the manner in which consciousness emanates from each of the body's doors, achieving separate rebirths, is as follows: It is said that from the Brahma aperture, one can be reborn in the Khechara realm of the Vidyadharas, etc.; from between the eyebrows, one can be reborn in the Form Realm; from the eyes, one can be reborn as a human; from the ears, one can be reborn as a human or non-human; from the nose, one can be reborn as a Yaksha; from the mouth, one can be reborn as a hungry ghost; from the navel, one can be reborn as a desire realm god; from the urinary passage, one can be reborn as an animal; and from the anal passage, one can be reborn in hell. Therefore, one must completely block the eight doors of samsara in every way. Because of the fear of prematurely performing Phowa outside the time of activity yoga, one should also temporarily block the Brahma aperture. The method for this is as follows: Visualize a red Kṣuṃ (藏文,梵文天城体:क्षुं,梵文罗马拟音:kṣuṃ,汉语字面意思:不动明王种子字) in the Brahma aperture; a black Hūṃ (藏文,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:huṃ,汉语字面意思:忿怒尊种子字) in the space between the eyebrows and in both eyes; a green Yuṃ (藏文,梵文天城体:युं,梵文罗马拟音:yuṃ,汉语字面意思:空行母种子字) in both ears and both nostrils; a white Suṃ (藏文,梵文天城体:सुं,梵文罗马拟音:suṃ,汉语字面意思:无量光种子字) in the mouth; a red Kṣuṃ (藏文,梵文天城体:क्षुं,梵文罗马拟音:kṣuṃ,汉语字面意思:不动明王种子字) in the navel; a yellow Suṃ (藏文,梵文天城体:सुं,梵文罗马拟音:suṃ,汉语字面意思:无量光种子字) in the urinary passage; and a red Kṣuṃ (藏文,梵文天城体:क्षुं,梵文罗马拟音:kṣuṃ,汉语字面意思:不动明王种子字) in the anal passage, and then block them. Furthermore, it is said that one should visualize a white Smyuṃ (藏文,梵文天城体:स्म्युं,梵文罗马拟音:smyuṃ,汉语字面意思:不确定) in the throat and a Smyuṃ (藏文,梵文天城体:स्म्युं,梵文罗马拟音:smyuṃ,汉语字面意思:不确定) in the heart, although there seem to be some different letters. Some believe that it is permissible to visualize all the letters as white. If those letters are not clear, one can also block the doors with pairs of Hūṃ (藏文,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:huṃ,汉语字面意思:忿怒尊种子字), or one can block them with balls of light. There are also cases where the doors are not blocked. If it is accomplished, blocking is best. Then, visualize clearly in the space in front of you the illusory form of the Yidam, inseparable from the Lama. Visualize a red A-shad (藏文,梵文天城体:不确定,梵文罗马拟音:不确定,汉语字面意思:不确定) at the meeting point of your three channels, and a blue Hūṃ (藏文,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:huṃ,汉语字面意思:忿怒尊种子字) in your heart, radiating five rays of light. First, hold the vase breathing, and then in one breath, recite twenty-one powerful Hik (藏文,梵文天城体:हिक्,梵文罗马拟音:hik,汉语字面意思:不确定), piling them up in the lower and upper parts of the body. Then, with seven recitations, draw the A-shad (藏文,梵文天城体:不确定,梵文罗马拟音:不确定,汉语字面意思:不确定) upwards and dissolve it into the Hūṃ (藏文,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:huṃ,汉语字面意思:忿怒尊种子字). Then, with thirteen recitations,

Guide the Hūṃ (ཧཱུྃ,hūṃ,हूँ,seed syllable) downwards, clear the letters from the Brahma hole, and exit through the top of the head. Then, visualize the Hūṃ (ཧཱུྃ,hūṃ,हूँ,seed syllable) syllable transferring to the heart of the Yidam deity like an arrow shot, and place it on the path of virtue. Again, inhale and recite "Ka Hik" twenty-one times in one breath while pressing the pulse wheel. Visualize the Hūṃ (ཧཱུྃ,hūṃ,हूँ,seed syllable) syllable emerging from the heart of the Yidam deity in the sky, gradually descending from the Brahma hole, residing in the heart. From there, the "A-sha" is emitted, gradually descending to the tri-junction and remaining there. Again, at the tri-junction, visualize the nature of wind and mind as the body of the Yidam deity, and as before, transfer the Yidam deity to the heart of the Yidam deity with twenty-one "Hik" syllables. Guide it back with twenty-one "Ka Hik" syllables and visualize it remaining at the tri-junction. Alternatively, visualize A (ཨ,ā,आ,seed syllable) at the tri-junction and Hūṃ (ཧཱུྃ,hūṃ,हूँ,seed syllable) in the heart, surrounded by the seed syllables of the four mothers, and Oṃ (ༀ,oṃ,ओ,seed syllable) in the throat. With seven "Hik" syllables, gradually guide the A (ཨ,ā,आ,seed syllable) syllable from the navel and absorb it into the Hūṃ (ཧཱུྃ,hūṃ,हूँ,seed syllable) syllable in the heart. Then, with seven syllables, guide the Hūṃ (ཧཱུྃ,hūṃ,हूँ,seed syllable) syllable upwards and mix it with the Oṃ (ༀ,oṃ,ओ,seed syllable) syllable in the throat. Then, with seven syllables, release the Hūṃ (ཧཱུྃ,hūṃ,हूँ,seed syllable) syllable from the Brahma hole and transfer it to the heart of the Yidam deity. Again, with seven "Ka Hik" syllables, lower the Hūṃ (ཧཱུྃ,hūṃ,हूँ,seed syllable) syllable to the throat, manifest the Oṃ (ༀ,oṃ,ओ,seed syllable) syllable there, and let it remain. Again, with seven syllables, lower the Hūṃ (ཧཱུྃ,hūṃ,हूँ,seed syllable) syllable to the heart and let it remain. Again, with seven syllables, manifest the A-sha from the Hūṃ (ཧཱུྃ,hūṃ,हूँ,seed syllable) syllable, lower it to the navel, and let it remain. Furthermore, there are many teachings on visualizing red and white bindus at the tri-junction, visualizing red and white Hūṃ (ཧཱུྃ,hūṃ,हूँ,seed syllable) syllables, and visualizing and transferring them in the heart, etc. All of these are acceptable, but the first two seem better. In some places, it is said to transfer with "A Hik" or "Ka Hik" and that these are recited mentally, but transferring with "Hik" and pressing with "Ka Hik" should both be recited loudly in one breath. When transferring upwards, exhale and contract the pulse wheel upwards, and when guiding downwards, inhale and press the pulse wheel. These seem important. When ending the session, press down the strong male breath three or five times, etc., and focus the awareness single-pointedly on the A-sha or the Yidam deity at the tri-junction. By practicing in four sessions, etc., in this way, as signs of accomplishing the transference of consciousness, the body becomes light and warmth arises, the complexion is good, food is easily digested, warmth arises at the crown of the head, and shaking, heat, swelling, and blisters, etc., are said to occur. After these signs appear, it is considered sufficient to practice three times or once a month. Regularly, in Akanishta, etc.
