Just as what appears to be water is merely a mirage and not real water, similarly, in deluded conceptualizations, various appearances of grasper and grasped arise, but in reality, these phenomena are merely illusions and not truly existent. One should think in this way and consider that the deluded conceptualizations of the mind, whose nature is empty, move momentarily like a mirage. Furthermore, one should ascertain that all conceptualizations are manifestations of the mind, and that the mind itself is primordially empty awareness without inherent existence. One should view all conceptual appearances as empty movements and empty appearances without inherent existence. Then, just as one trains oneself to regard pleasure and displeasure as illusions, one should also determine gain and loss, fame and obscurity, happiness and suffering as illusory, thereby maintaining equanimity towards the eight worldly concerns and continuously practicing in this way. After maintaining equanimity towards the eight worldly concerns in a secluded place, one should go to a place where people gather and mix with various circumstances. If feelings such as pleasure and displeasure still arise, one should practice again. Some people at this stage, like training in illusion, also include the body, speech, and mind of other sentient beings. This is because in the state of meditative equipoise, it has been ascertained that all outer and inner phenomena are manifestations of one's own mind, and therefore the mind itself is trained as an illusion. In the state of post-meditation, when the appearances of outer and inner phenomena arise as other than one's own mind, one should contemplate the appearances of external objects as illusions. If one can contemplate the body of other sentient beings as an image, speech as an echo, and mind as a mirage, and diligently practice, it will be very beneficial. Some people, when practicing the pure and impure illusory body, do not rely on looking at the image in a mirror, nor do they combine the image with themselves for practice. This is because they have not understood the unique necessity of this method of practice, thereby neglecting the practical experience of many wise and accomplished masters. Second, the practice of the pure illusory body is divided into two aspects: first, to firmly establish the appearance of the deity's form; and second, to contemplate the deity as illusory. First, in order to enter the completion stage, it is necessary to have a clear and stable generation stage beforehand, and the practice of tummo also requires a clear visualization of the deity, and so on. Considering these factors, in most of the instructions, at this stage, only a brief mention is made of contemplating the deity as illusory, and it seems common that present-day practitioners rarely exert effort in practicing the generation stage before entering the completion stage.

Such deity yogis are not only the basis of many paths of generation and completion stages, but also, at this time, diligent practice is the real basis for the means of arising in the bardo sambhogakaya. If you do not gain certainty about this, then even in the stage of dream practice, the ability to transform into a deity body, etc., will not appear. Therefore, I think it is good to explain in detail the practice stages of the deity illusory body. First, you must clearly manifest the appearance of the deity's body, and then you must establish a state where it cannot be harmed by any factors. First, the method of manifesting clarity is: to have the image of a yidam deity painted by a skilled painter appear on the surface of a very clear mirror, and then look at it. If there is no reflection, have the painted image appear in the mirror, and then have that image appear again in another mirror, and then look at it. If that doesn't work, just look at the painting on the canvas. First, look clearly at the entire form of the body, and then make it appear clearly in your mind. For example, look at it as clearly as you remember the appearance of a person you have seen for a long time. Then, gradually look carefully at the head and its parts, such as the eyes and face, and manifest their clarity. Similarly, manifest the posture of the body, the hands and feet, etc., and then also manifest the clear appearance of the consort in the same way. If some people cannot clearly manifest the complete form from the beginning, then first look at the part of the body above the neck and make it gradually appear clearly in your mind. Similarly, gradually manifest the hands and feet, etc., first making the form appear roughly clear, and then manifesting the clear appearance of each detail one by one. If you can be sure that the clear appearance of that deity will appear in front of you, then it will be easier to visualize yourself in that form. For example, just as you can show the same posture yourself after remembering the dancer's posture. However, you must gradually complete the clear manifestation of each detail, thereby visualizing yourself as the deity's form. Just like rubbing wood to make fire, you must practice continuously with strong desire until the desired clear appearance appears. After practicing in this way, the best case is that the manifested image is clearer than the painting, the medium case is that it is as clear as the painting, and the worst case is that an image that is slightly less clear than the painting will appear.
