In general, mountains and houses, etc., are the outer world, and humans and animals, etc., are sentient beings. In particular, for the various appearances of form, sound, smell, taste, and touch that appear to one's own sensory consciousness, one should contemplate that these are merely appearances in delusion and are not established as truly existent, like illusions. Furthermore, this should be determined through the eight examples of illusions. Although not truly existent, the appearances are to be contemplated as being like illusions and dreams. For example, when a magician, through mantras, transforms stones and wooden sticks into horses, cattle, etc., although they are not truly existent, they appear in those forms. Similarly, when one dreams of humans and animals, etc., in a dream, although they are not truly existent, they appear there. Likewise, for all appearances of objects, such as the outer world and sentient beings, although they do not exist with their own essence in ultimate truth, they merely appear distinctly to the deluded consciousness in conventional truth. This is how to contemplate it. Contemplate that which arises from the assembly of causes and conditions as being like an echo and a reflection. For example, an echo arises from the assembly of causes and conditions, such as a rock, a sheltered valley, and the cause of making a sound. Similarly, a reflection appears from the assembly of causes and conditions, such as a clear mirror, the form of a person, and the absence of any obstruction between the two. Likewise, contemplate that various appearances of white and red merely arise from the interdependence of karma and the assembly of various causes and conditions. Contemplate impermanent and moving phenomena as being like dew and bubbles. For example, dew forms on the tips of grass in the summer, but disappears as soon as the sun rises, being impermanent. Similarly, bubbles arise from water for a moment and then vanish in a moment, being moving. Likewise, for all appearances of objects, contemplate that they are of a nature that is not even momentary and is constantly changing. Contemplate phenomena that appear but are without inherent existence as being like mirages and rainbows. For example, when a mirage appears on a vast plain, although it appears like a stream of water, it is not established as having the nature of water. Similarly, although a rainbow appears in various colors, it is not established as having a substantial nature. Likewise, for the various appearances of white, red, etc., of objects, contemplate that they do not exist with their own individual essence. If one can establish that all phenomena appear but are without inherent existence through the view of emptiness, which is the nature of reality, that would be excellent. Otherwise, first, through the practice of calm abiding and insight, contemplate all appearances of objects with an attitude of grasping them as illusory.

One should meditate as if it were an illusion. In the post-meditation period, one should train in not being distracted by the recollection of illusion. From the appearance of objects, one should cut off the clinging to reality and definitely generate the experience and ascertainment of illusion. Secondly, there are two ways to rely on the object of focus: meditating on the impure illusory body and meditating on the pure illusory body. The first is to train the ordinary body, speech, and mind as illusion. In this, training the body like a reflection is as follows: One should make one's reflection appear in a mirror and look at it well. From the assembly of the clear mirror, one's own form, and the absence of obscurations in between, the appearance of the form appears in the mirror, but it is not established as a form. Likewise, from the assembly of karma and causes and conditions, it appears like one's own body, but in reality, it has no self-nature. One should think of it as appearance and emptiness. Furthermore, one should meditate by combining it with the previous examples of illusion. Then, one should observe whether the reflection in the mirror is happy when adorned with beautiful ornaments and clothes, or whether it is unhappy when beaten. Just as there is no appearance of happiness or unhappiness in it, one's own body is also the same. Whether adorned with beautiful ornaments and clothes or beaten, one should not have happiness or unhappiness, and train it as illusion. By this example, one should train the body's beauty or ugliness, cold or heat, hunger or thirst, and so on, as illusion. Although happiness and unhappiness are mental appearances, meditating on them when training the body and speech as illusion is said to be for the purpose of reversing the clinging to the body and speech. Then, training speech like an echo is as follows: As mentioned earlier, although an echo arises from causes and conditions, the sound is not established as true. Likewise, one should think that all kinds of speech and sounds of oneself and others are merely sounds arising from the assembly of causes and conditions, without any essence, and that they are empty of sound. Then, one should go to the place where the echo arises, and if one praises oneself, the sound of the echo will also praise. One should observe whether one is happy with that, or whether one is unhappy when spoken with bad words. Just as there is no happiness or unhappiness in it, one's own and others' speech is also the same. It is sound but has no self-nature, and is like an echo. Therefore, one should not have happiness or unhappiness in others' praise or criticism, and train it as illusion. Then, training the mind like a mirage is as follows: When a mirage rises, it appears like a stream of water.
