In a rain of weapons, due to the force of karma, one is threatened by heat and seeks refuge, so one stays nearby. However, the wind moves the rain of weapons, and all the weapons chop the limbs into pieces, causing extreme suffering. The Shalmali tree: thinking, "If only I could reach the top of the extremely high mountain," one climbs. But iron thorns pointing upwards, eight fingers long and sixteen fingers long, pierce the body into ashes, causing suffering. Upon reaching the top of the mountain, crows and vultures and the like peck out eyeballs, pull out tongues, and dig out brains and the like, causing suffering. Again, thinking, "If only I could reach the foot of the mountain," one goes downwards, but the iron thorns all point upwards, piercing the body. At the foot of the mountain, iron jackals, dogs, and foxes and the like eat the limbs, tearing at each other, the body is torn into pieces, causing suffering. Furthermore, on a ground of burning iron, the body is impaled with stakes, and the tongue is impaled with iron stakes, suffering from plowing and the like, these sufferings are also among the temporary cycles. Fourth, the immeasurable river of ashes: beyond the razor plain, the river of ashes overwhelms the body, and the inside and outside of the body are burned. Hell guardians guard the perimeter, causing suffering. Thinking about these sufferings, repeatedly contemplating and meditating, thinking, "I must practice the sacred Dharma that liberates from them." Second, contemplating the suffering of the hungry ghosts, there are three types: those with external obscurations, those with internal obscurations, and those with obscurations of food and drink, or those with obscurations of obscurations. The first is: due to the power of non-virtue such as miserliness, one is born in the realm of hungry ghosts. Although tormented by hunger and thirst, one cannot even see food and drink. From afar, it seems that there is a mountain of rice and a great realm of water, so one goes there. But because it is very far and difficult to travel, the body and mind suffer. Upon arriving there, what appeared to be a mountain of rice turns into a white stone or a pile of white earth. What previously appeared to be a realm of water turns into a mirage, green earth, or blue moss, etc., and it is extremely painful because there is no food, drink, or enjoyment. Those with internal obscurations are those who, on top of the previous suffering, have food

Having eaten a little, at first, the mouth is as small as the eye of a needle, making it impossible to swallow, causing the mouth to crack and bleed, which is very painful. Then, the throat is as thin as a horse's tail, making it impossible to swallow. The food also has a rough texture, causing the throat to crack and burn. Then, the stomach swells slightly to the size of a mountain, but it is neither full nor quenched, causing pain again. This is the obstacle of food and drink. When wandering around in search of food, being driven, beaten, and threatened by other leaders of pretas causes suffering. When a little food is finally found, there is fear that it will be stolen by others. Even if it is eaten, it is still impossible to swallow as before, and so on, causing suffering. When the food enters the stomach, due to the power of karma, the food burns, and the intestines and stomach are all burned and turned to ashes. Some pretas have flames burning from all the sense gates of their bodies, which is very painful. Although it is so painful, one must endure intense suffering until the karma is exhausted. In order to avoid suffering like this again, I must practice the pure path to enlightenment, so I contemplate. Third, contemplating the suffering of animals. There are two types: those who live in the depths and those who are scattered. The first is: in the outer ocean, there are creatures such as sea monsters, as numerous as the mash of strong liquor. They squeeze each other, feeling the suffering of narrowness. Being driven by the ocean waves in all directions, they have no fixed abode. It is uncertain who they will meet and who they will associate with, and they have no sense of security. The big ones eat the small ones, and the bodies of the big ones such as sea monsters are pierced by shells and the like, causing suffering. Also, those who live in the darkness between continents are separated from objects of light, and they cannot see each other. One sits on top of another, feeling crowded and heavy. Because it is very crowded and squeezed, the body is exhausted and even broken. There is not even time to search for food and drink, causing suffering. The second is: animals that depend on humans are forced to carry unbearable loads, plow the fields, be milked, be bound by iron chains, be whipped, be used for all kinds of labor, and finally be slaughtered for meat or sold to others.
