Driven by malice and hatred, if one harms another person, thinking, "How wonderful it would be if this person were in great pain," that is malice. Driven by ignorance, doubting the existence of karma, the Four Noble Truths, the Three Jewels, etc., and doubting whether it is true that virtuous causes lead to happiness and non-virtuous causes lead to suffering, even though the lamas have said so, that is wrong view. These are the three and ten non-virtuous actions of the mind. Secondly, the results of these non-virtuous actions are of two types: temporary results and ultimate results. The first is: short life, poverty of resources, one's own family members treating one as an enemy, being driven by others, discord with one's friends, hearing unpleasant words, not believing the source of those words to be true, ultimately having no results, encountering great fear, views becoming inverted, and so on. The second, the ultimate result, is: committing small non-virtuous actions leads to rebirth as an animal, committing medium non-virtuous actions leads to rebirth as a hungry ghost, and committing great non-virtuous actions leads to rebirth in hell. Thirdly, in this way, being driven by the three poisons, engaging in these non-virtuous actions, the result cannot go beyond the lower realms, therefore, no matter what, even if it means risking one's life, one should not do them, vowing in one's heart and abandoning them with body and speech. Third, contemplating virtuous actions also includes: contemplating the nature of actions, contemplating the results of actions, and exhorting to practice virtuous actions. First, abandoning the ten non-virtuous actions mentioned earlier, and being driven by non-attachment, non-hatred, and non-ignorance, striving to practice the ten virtuous actions as much as possible. Secondly, the results of these virtuous actions are of two types: temporary results and ultimate results. The first is: long life, great wealth, family members and so on being agreeable to one's mind, gaining fame in all directions, being in harmony with friends, clear senses, trustworthy words, fulfillment of wishes, absence of fear, views becoming pure, and so on. The ultimate result is: practicing small, medium, and great ten virtuous actions can lead to becoming a Hearer, a Solitary Realizer, and a Bo-

Attained unsurpassed Bodhi. Third, like this, practicing the ten virtues, whichever of the three Bodhis is attained, even if a state like that of a Shravaka is attained, one will still be liberated from the fears of Samsara and the lower realms, so one should think of practicing purity in any case. Third, thinking about indeterminate karma has three aspects. First, the nature of karma is: without any intention of either virtue or non-virtue, eating food and making things, etc., in a neutral manner. Second, its result cannot produce either happiness or suffering, so making things in a neutral manner, etc., is pleasant and acceptable. Third, transforming it into virtue: it is transformed by the power of intention. For example, even when eating food, thinking of nourishing the worms in the body, or thinking of making the body strong and then engaging in contemplation, etc., and even when walking, doing so for the sake of meeting the Lama and for the sake of the Dharma, or thinking that there are Buddha and Bodhisattva statues on the right side, and then thinking of showing the strongest right side of the body to them and circumambulating them. Third, if one is attached to self-interest, one is not a Bodhisattva. The meaning of this is that, as previously explained, if one sees all of Samsara as suffering, and for the sake of liberation from it, one practices various kinds of virtue, whether small or large, even if one attains the state of a Shravaka or Pratyekabuddha, one still has not perfected self-interest and cannot accomplish great benefit for others, and it is also an obstacle to attaining perfect Buddhahood, so one should not only pursue such self-interest, but for the benefit of all sentient beings, attain the state of perfect Buddhahood. This will not arise from incomplete causes and conditions or from error. For example, in winter, even if one sows the seeds of rice when there is no warmth or moisture, they will not grow. If one wants rice but sows barley, the crop of rice will not grow. If one wants a crop of rice, one must have the seeds of rice as the cause, and water, fertilizer, warmth, and moisture as the conditions for it to grow. Similarly, perfect Bodhi is said in the Ornament of Clear Realization: the cause is born from great compassion, the root is born from the mind of Bodhi, and the condition is perfected by skill in means. Therefore, in order to practice its meaning, one must cultivate loving-kindness.
