Meditating on compassion, meditating on the mind of enlightenment, and training in their practices. First, there are four: meditating on relatives, meditating on neutral individuals, meditating on enemies, and meditating on all sentient beings. First, there are also three: recognizing (them as) mothers, remembering their kindness, and meditating on loving-kindness towards them. First, taking the example of one's own present mother, not only has she not done (harm) in this life, but she has not done (harm) in many lifetimes. As the teacher Nagarjuna said in the Friendly Letter: "The ends of mothers are like walnut seeds. If counted into balls, the earth would not be enough." Also, as it says in the sutra: "The amount of milk drunk from mothers by one sentient being is more than the four oceans. The horses and elephants given by one sentient being as fathers surpass even the world of Brahma." So it is said. Second, remembering their kindness means acknowledging the immeasurable benefits of having been a mother. During pregnancy, for nine or ten months, the body is heavy and weary. Then, at the time of birth, one endures the suffering of one's own body and mind separating. After birth, when one is unable to understand anything and is as helpless as a worm, one is cared for with loving affection and watched over with compassionate eyes. Delicious food is tasted with the tongue, unclean things are wiped away with the hands, (one is) placed in the mouth of ten fingers, food and clothing and so on are provided as much as possible, and all harm is warded off. When one grows up, precious possessions, even those worth more than one's own life, are given. All kinds of teachings, such as reading and writing, are taught. In short, one thinks of all the kindnesses bestowed, such as the benefits given and the protection from all harm. Third, meditating on loving-kindness. The teacher Chandrakirti said, "Actively working for the benefit of beings is called great love." Therefore, the nature of loving-kindness is to think of sentient beings as having happiness and the causes of happiness, which is the mind of loving-kindness. Therefore, one thinks, "May this kind mother have happiness and the causes of happiness," which is related to generating the mind of enlightenment. One thinks, "How wonderful it would be if she had happiness and the causes of happiness," which is related to aspiration. One thinks, "May she have happiness and the causes of happiness," which is related to wishing prayers. In this way, one meditates without distraction and also expresses it in words. In this way, just as one recognizes the root mother, remembers her kindness, and meditates on loving-kindness, one does the same for neutral
