Meditate by alternating between mother, enemy, and all sentient beings. If you become well-versed in cultivating loving-kindness in this way, compassion will arise through its power. As it is said: The field of compassion is loving-kindness; it is truly born from suffering. Therefore, when cultivating compassion, the essence of compassion is: The teacher Chandrakirti said: Completely protecting those who have suffering is called great compassion. As it is said, it is the mind that cannot bear to see the suffering of the object and desires to be separated from it. That is, cultivating towards relatives, cultivating towards enemies, relatives, and neutrals, cultivating towards enemies, and cultivating towards all sentient beings. The first has three aspects, like knowing the mother, remembering kindness, and cultivating loving-kindness. Cultivating compassion is: Visualize your root mother, whether alive or dead, clearly in front of you. This kind mother of mine is suffering and deprived of happiness, how pitiful! She must be free from suffering and the cause of suffering. However, looking at the mother's own situation, she has suffering and the cause of suffering, and she is enjoying it, how pitiful! Generate the thought of wanting to free her from this kind of suffering, associated with generating Bodhicitta, etc., and cultivate as in the case of cultivating loving-kindness. Then, again, alternate between neutral people, enemies, and all sentient beings, cultivating genuine compassion as it arises. When compassion arises in this way, Bodhicitta will arise through its power. As it is said: Its root is considered to be compassion, always thinking of benefiting sentient beings. As it is said, therefore, after that, cultivate relative Bodhicitta, exchanging self and others: May the suffering of all sentient beings ripen on me, may all of them attain happiness through my virtue. Like this, recite the words and cultivate from the depths of your heart, may all the suffering and discomfort of all sentient beings equal to space ripen on me. May all the virtue, happiness, and goodness that I have be attained by all sentient beings. Fourth, learning conduct through these is: In general, the conduct of a Bodhisattva is to abandon harming others and

to accomplish the ability of. In particular, in order to ripen oneself, one must practice the conduct of the six perfections, and ripen others through the four objects of gathering, as described in the Sutra of the Essence of Space, the Compendium of Trainings, the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life, and the Precious Garland of Advice to the King, one should practice accordingly. Fourth, if clinging arises, it is not a view. This means that even if relative bodhicitta arises well, if it is accompanied by clinging to reality, one will fall into the extremes of permanence and annihilation and will not be liberated. Therefore, in order to counteract clinging to things and characteristics, one must cultivate both shamatha and vipashyana. As it is said, "Having known that the faults of afflictions are destroyed by vipashyana endowed with shamatha, one should first seek shamatha, which is also accomplished in the absence of worldly attachments." Therefore, there are three: cultivating shamatha, cultivating vipashyana, and cultivating them in union. First, one should live in a secluded and pleasant place, ruled by a righteous king and free from harm, without the comings and goings of people, and without thorns of meditation such as enemy invasions, and sit on a comfortable seat. Before each session, one should take refuge and generate bodhicitta. One should sit in the vajra posture, with hands in the meditation mudra, the tip of the tongue slightly touching the palate, the spine straight, and the eyes half-open and half-closed, maintaining moderation, and then meditate. As Maitreya Bodhisattva said, "Relying on the correct dwelling, in order to place the mind on the mind, and in order to distinguish the excellent Dharma, shamatha and vipashyana are taught." Therefore, focusing the mind single-pointedly on any external or internal object of focus, such as a black pebble, is shamatha. The Venerable Bhadra said: The Samadhiraja Sutra says that one should meditate on the body of the Buddha. There is no difference between this and the previous method of meditating on a pebble, etc., in terms of making the mind focus on one object. However, since meditating on the body of the Buddha leads to remembering the Buddha and accumulates more merit, therefore, on a throne made of jewels in front, spread with various lotus and moon cushions, one should visualize Shakyamuni Buddha, with a body color like pure gold, the right hand in the earth-touching mudra, the left hand in the meditation mudra, wearing saffron monastic robes.
