. Meditate on residing in the vajra posture, and especially focus on his body and the urna hair between the eyebrows. Alternatively, visualize red Amitabha, with the mudra of equipoise. It is also permissible to meditate by focusing on the seat and so on as before. Thus, practicing calm abiding before insight meditation is the meaning of "first, calm abiding should be sought." If one is well-versed in calm abiding and can keep the mind on any object of focus for many years, this calm abiding alone is not sufficient; one must also practice insight meditation as an antidote to uproot afflictions. Furthermore, with the wisdom of individual discernment, analyze the reality of inner and outer phenomena, and the wisdom that realizes freedom from extremes such as existence and non-existence, permanence and annihilation, is insight meditation. The aforementioned calm abiding is a method for the mind to abide in one-pointedness. Afterwards, the meaning seen by insight meditation must be kept in one-pointedness by calm abiding. Second, there are three aspects to practicing insight meditation: proving that external appearances are made by the mind; proving that the mind is like an illusion; and proving that illusion is without inherent existence. First, the various appearances of external objects, such as horses, elephants, men, women, walls, vases, felt, and so on, are not without cause, nor are they made by Ishvara, Maheshvara, and so on, nor are they made by the four elements and atoms, nor are they made by the emanations of the Buddhas, but they arise from the power of the various habitual tendencies that have been placed on one's own mind since beginningless time. The maker of all this is the mind. Meditate on the thought that there is no other maker of it other than the mind. Second, as stated in the Samadhiraja Sutra: "Magicians conjure up forms, horses, elephants, various vehicles. There is nothing that appears in them as it is. Know all dharmas to be like that." Thus, the various external objects mentioned earlier are also like dreams and illusions. For example, in a dream, one experiences various pleasures and sufferings, but upon awakening, everyone knows that it is not real. Therefore, one should generate certainty that this phenomenon, which is merely conventional, is like a reflection in a mirror, and meditate on it repeatedly. Third,

Thus, the various external objects that appear like illusions are merely appearances in conventional truth, so appearances are not obstructed. But if analyzed, in ultimate truth, they do not exist even to the extent of a hair split into a hundred pieces. Meditate in this way. Third is meditating on union: First, gradually establish that the appearance of objects is made by the mind, and thereby realize emptiness, which is free from all extremes of elaboration, and be certain of this. Then, the mind that realizes in this way and the reality of objects are inseparable, like water merging into water, or butter merging into butter, becoming one taste. Focus single-pointedly on this and meditate. By continuously meditating in this way, one becomes accustomed. For sentient beings who have not realized this, compassion without object, led by emptiness, arises, and the delusion of grasping at things as real is reversed, so that illusory appearances arise as wisdom. This is called transforming illusory appearances into wisdom, thereby realizing the state of the complete and perfect Buddha, the nature of the three bodies. Third, sealing with dedication: This should be done at the end of every session. Specifically, dedicate in this way: The root of virtue from my meditation on profound samadhi, and all the roots of virtue done by myself and others, represented by this, all belong to the realm of conditioned phenomena, and I dedicate them all. The object of dedication also includes the state of the omniscient Buddha. The purpose of the dedication is for the benefit of all sentient beings as vast as space. By knowing everything as dreamlike and illusory, pray and proceed with this as a premise: By this virtue, may all beings accumulate the two accumulations of merit and wisdom, and may they obtain the two supreme fruits arising from merit and wisdom. Etc., recite any dedication prayer that appears in the Sutras and Shastras. This was written at the request of the mantra-holder, the great Vajradhara Lama Kunga Lekpa, who possesses the precious qualities of scripture and realization. Having listened twice at the feet of the omniscient Dharma Lord Kunga Sangpo, and recorded by the monk Kunga Lekrin, who takes the dust of the Lama's feet on his head, and then presented again to the Lama Dharma Lord for review and correction. Afterwards, the sources of the scriptures will be clearly written.
