As it is said, "That is exceedingly rare." Therefore, for those who have gathered these conditions and are able to listen to the Dharma, one should listen with joy and delight. In particular, the sutra says, "Listen well and keep it well in mind!" The opposite of this is to not pay attention to the words and meaning of the Dharma, which is like the fault of a vessel turned upside down; even if one pays attention, not holding it with mindfulness and awareness is like the fault of a vessel with a hole in the bottom; even if one holds it with mindfulness and awareness, as the Pramāṇavārttika says, "Pride and disbelief, not seeking meaning, external distraction, internal absorption, weariness are the stains of listening." As it is said, the arrogance of thinking 'I am more superior than this speaker in terms of self-awareness and qualities,' the disbelief of thinking 'this speaker has such faults,' the lack of a mind seeking meaning, thinking 'if only I could understand this Dharma being taught,' speculating on external objects such as forms, and the mind being distracted by play and jokes, the thoughts of the three poisons surging like waves, and focusing the mind on samadhi, etc., these are all absorbing the mind internally; and thinking 'if only it would be good to end the Dharma (listening) just at this point,' this is weariness of listening to the Dharma. Being associated with any of the six stains is the fault of a stained vessel, therefore the three faults of the vessel must be abandoned. Furthermore, both teacher and student should rely on the six perceptions and practice with the six perfections, namely: seeing the teacher as a doctor, the listeners as patients, the Dharma as good medicine, afflictions as a serious illness, diligently practicing as healing the illness, seeing the Tathagata as an infallible holy being, and the six perceptions of thinking 'by this means, may the Dharma of the Sugata remain for a long time.' The teacher giving the words and meaning of the Dharma, and offering wealth etc. for that purpose is generosity; abstaining from disharmonious factors in listening and speaking is discipline; not being weary of the hardships of body and speech is patience; being delighted in listening and speaking is diligence; focusing single-mindedly on the Dharma is concentration; and thoroughly distinguishing the words and meaning is wisdom. Therefore, it is necessary to be certain to possess the six perfections,

Please listen clearly and attentively. The Dharma to be heard is: Here, from all the Tathagatas of the three times, etc., it was transmitted to Yeshe Gyaltsen Pal Zangpo. He transmitted it to the crown jewel of the wise men of the snowy land, the second Thubwang of the degenerate age, Kunkhyen Kunga Zangpo. He transmitted it to the regent Dampa Kunga Wangchuk. He transmitted it to Yongdzin Chokyi Gyalpo. He transmitted it to the omniscient Konchok Lhundrup. He transmitted it to the great scholar Khyennga Konchok Gyatso. He transmitted it to Jetsun Ngawang Choklek Dorje. He transmitted it to his nephew Khyenrab Tenzin Zangpo. He transmitted it to the nephew Jampa Ngawang Lhundrup. He transmitted it to Mormchen Omniscient Ngawang Kunga Lhundrup. He transmitted it to Jamyang Gon Nesangwa. He transmitted it to Pal Sakyapa Ngawang Kunga Lodro Sangye Tenpai Gyaltsen Pal Zangpo. He transmitted it to Jetsunma Achime Tenpai Nyima, Jamyang Khonton Ngawang Dorje Rinchen. He transmitted it to my root guru so-and-so. He gladly bestowed it upon us with great kindness. Thus, one should translate according to one's own lineage record. Second, the preliminary to the actual pith instructions. From "the main practice" to "I will strive in practice," say three times. Second, the main practice has four parts, the first of which is the aim: If you are attached to this life, you are not a Dharma practitioner. The meaning is: Jetsun Rinpoche Drakpa said, "First, do not be attached to this life," to "Leave the meditation of the eight worldly concerns behind." As it is said, one must not be attached to this life, from "must" onwards, contemplate on how difficult it is to obtain through examples. Fourth: It is very rare to have all eighteen qualities of leisure and endowment, therefore it is difficult to obtain. The eight leisures are: Hell beings, pretas, and animals, long-lived gods and barbarians, wrong views, a Buddha-less age, and dumbness, these are the eight unfree states. As it is said, one must be separated from the eight unfree states. Among them, hell is a place tormented by intense suffering, pretas are of the nature of mental anguish, animals are generally ignorant and mostly shameless, and long-lived gods are the cause of adverse circumstances, wrong views, and manifest arrogance.
