Regarding the practice of short, regarding the practice of long. Each of those also has two types of practice: in the manner of cutting off and in the manner of benefiting. Among them, the first, regarding the practice of short, is: from the tip of the nose to four fingers' width of space, visualize that your own awareness exists there, keep both body and mind tense, and becoming accustomed to it is practicing in the manner of cutting off. As before, relax both body and mind and meditate, which is practicing in the manner of benefiting, it is the samadhi of skillful means. Having become accustomed to that, in the place of eight fingers' width, visualize that your own awareness exists there, alternately meditate with tension and relaxation, which is the samadhi of wisdom. Having become accustomed to that, from sixteen fingers to one cubit of space, mix your own awareness into it and meditate, which is the samadhi of union, the first two are with faults, and the latter is the samadhi without faults. During those times, no matter what kind of experience of the mind abiding arises, whether high or low, good or bad, do not expect, fear, accept, or reject, but let it be natural. At this time, mostly the experience of emptiness of self-nature will arise. Second, in order to enhance that, regarding the practice of long, is: after the previous experience has arisen and is slightly stable, first completely do the six branches of preliminary meditation, then extend your own mind to the east by one cubit, four cubits, eight cubits, sixteen cubits, etc., until the edge of space. That also, like before, practice in sequence in the manner of cutting off and benefiting, unlike before, the experience of bliss and emptiness that cannot be expressed, free from extremes, will arise; no longer going outward, clinging to one seat and abiding, the experience of diminished power will arise; even if released outward, it will return, the experience of diminished radiance will arise, no matter which of the three experiences arises, do not modify it, but let it be natural. Similarly, for the space of the south, west, north, above, and below, also repeatedly practice in the manner of cutting off and benefiting, directly maintain the three experiences that arise. From those, relying on the experience of being free from extremes, like space, being free from extremes such as existence and non-existence, being or not being, etc., because it is not established anywhere, it is emptiness, because it operates on all awareness and knowable objects, it is pervasive, thinking that nothing can destroy it, it is the experience of permanence, the experience of possessing the four qualities will arise. Second, in the middle, abiding equally in suchness has three

Like breaking an eggshell, connect name with the inconceivable unborn. Like breaking free from bonds, connect meaning with the inconceivable unborn. Like clearing muddy water, connect samadhi with the inconceivable unborn. First, just as a gosling is complete in its body inside the egg, but cannot walk without breaking the outer shell, and can walk once it is broken, so too, if one is attached to name and bound by deluded thoughts, liberation will occur when one is free from the attachment to name and knows it to be unborn. Because name is not initially born with us, but is later established, yet we mistakenly think it is "my name," and in the end, at the time of death, name does not follow us, but naturally ceases, therefore name is unborn. Praising name does not benefit name itself, and criticizing name does not harm it. As it is said in the scriptures: "Unborn is unborn like the sky, born is unborn like the sky, ceased is unborn like the sky." By remembering and practicing this meaning, just as clouds and fog dissolve into the sky, the thought of clinging to name dissolves into the realm of mind itself, and a clear and non-conceptual experience arises. Furthermore, the Mother Sutra says: "Subhuti, form is merely a designation. What is a designation is also the nature of phenomena." And the scriptures say: "Non-duality is only a name, yet this name cannot be found. Yogis should be tolerant of those who grasp at names in non-duality." Therefore, such samadhi can also obtain the name of the three doors of liberation, and by being liberated from the bonds of name, one can touch the inconceivable meaning. Second, just as a being stuck in a hundred glues, even if it is in the same place, cannot move without breaking free, and can move once it is broken, so too, if one's own mind is bound by various conceptual thoughts, liberation will occur if one knows it to be unborn. To contemplate this meaning: if one examines the afflictive thoughts in one's own mind in detail, taking a gross one such as anger as an example, and examines the cause of its initial arising, the nature of its present existence, and the result of its ultimate cessation, one will find that its nature is not established at any time, and it is the same as the inconceivable unborn sky, and one should contemplate this.
