Having abandoned, do not entrust any tasks to the mind. Having adjusted the mind in this way, even if there is nothing to cultivate, it is absolutely necessary to have unwavering mindfulness, not letting it fall into ordinary self-continuation. By abiding in that state, the mind is grasped and abides slightly, sometimes abides, mostly abides, and so on, the three states of abiding gradually arise. If the mind is not grasped and is only distracted by wildness, as it is said in the scriptures, "The mind is like a wild elephant." Therefore, without separating from the guard of mindfulness, let the conceptual thoughts wander wherever they may. Do not have hopes or fears such as wanting the mind to be grasped or to abide, but relax and abide. By letting go in this way, it will not find a place to go and will return to itself, thereby abiding peacefully. As Sarahapa said, "Like a crow that flies from a ship, it circles and circles, and then returns to the same place." That is the meaning. By repeatedly familiarizing oneself in this way, the extent to which the mind is grasped and abides is like touching the fur of an animal smeared with glue with one's hand, it does not wander elsewhere but abides closely. The external signs are great laziness, great forgetfulness, and encountering obstacles in whatever one does. However, these signs are also because the shamatha is slightly flawed and has not eliminated subtle dullness. Therefore, during meditation, expand the appearance of the mind and make it wide and clear. Without any desired goals, increase the clarity of the mind, and in a clear and lucid state, repeatedly destroy and repeatedly cultivate, this is essential. Fourth, introducing reality itself, divided into three points: First, identifying clarity; second, placing the mind on freedom from extremes; third, generating certainty about the inexpressible. The first point is: As the Great Brahmin said, "Water and fire, place them in a self-luminous unity. I neither take nor abandon comings and goings." Practice it like this. On the basis of the aforementioned three methods of abiding, generate an abiding that is free from flaws, and on this basis, identify the clarity of the mind and maintain it without distraction, the nature of the mind's clarity manifests, and the two parts of shamatha and vipashyana come together, the mind reaches the ultimate clarity, like the sun rising in a cloudless sky, generating a clear and lucid certainty, this is the sign of beginning to generate vipashyana. The signs of this are clear mindfulness, reduced forgetfulness, and whatever one does
