In order to establish all beings in the state of Buddhahood, and in order to generate the realization of true Bodhicitta in the mindstream, I accumulate merit. Thus, generate a pure Bodhicitta. Visualize in the sky in front of you, the all-pervading Vajradhara, the Yidam peaceful and wrathful deities, the lineage lamas, and your own root lamas, residing distinctly in order. Arrange the thirty-seven-heap mandala. Recite the appropriate verses for offerings, etc., and offer four times to each of the four fields of merit above. Each time, recite the abbreviated verses such as "The ground is anointed with perfume," offering many times. Then, visualize the root lama, the essence of all refuges, residing on your crown, and pray repeatedly with strong devotion. For those who fear the suffering of samsara and seek liberation, taking refuge in the precious Three Jewels is the root of practicing the sacred Dharma. Therefore, visualize the above fields of merit and the lamas and deities pervading space in your mind, and recite as many verses as possible, such as the four lines of refuge. With lineage prayers and Ogmin Choying, pray to the general refuge and especially to the root lama with strong devotion and longing, making sure it blends into your mindstream. Repeat the mandala, refuge, and prayer again. Repeat such a sequence without fixed sessions or breaks until signs of accumulating merit and the entry of blessings appear, or after several days of intense effort, the accumulation of merit increases and the mindstream is purified, thus making meditation meaningful. Third, holding the mind in between: In a secluded place where there is no distraction from meditation, sit comfortably in a cross-legged posture on a comfortable and soft cushion. First, take refuge as in the common Mahayana refuge. Meditating on Bodhicitta: Pray that the great Vajradhara guru, and all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, consider me. Just as the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, and the great Bodhisattvas generated the great Bodhicitta, so too, I will liberate those sentient beings who have not been liberated, free those who have not been freed, and give

And for the sake of those who have not completely passed beyond sorrow, to lead them to completely pass beyond sorrow. From this time forth, until I reach the heart of enlightenment, I will generate the great mind of enlightenment. Through the practices employed in the secret mantra path of a Bodhisattva, in this way, generate a mind with the nature of aspiring to enlightenment in a conventional manner. Just as through the power of meditating on the ultimate mind of enlightenment it is generated, so too, I will generate and meditate on these two aspects of mind. Recite this three times and generate the mind. Visualize the Lama as his actual form or in the form of Vajradhara on your crown, and pray with intense devotion. Visualize the Yidam deity as small as a needle tip and slightly slow down the breath. Then, cut off the flow of discursive thoughts. Open your eyes and smile appropriately. The great Brahmin said: This mind bound by ropes, if loosened, there is no doubt it will be liberated. Therefore, relax both body and mind and remain calm. Relaxation does not mean squeezing the body and breath, or tightening the mind too much, but rather remaining comfortably. The key points of the body in meditation are always important, so do not settle into a state of carelessness. There are three ways to settle: in a raw state, in a relaxed state, and in an uncorrected, naturally clear state. Settling in a raw state is like gold ore, whatever its natural state, even if untouched, it is the best of treasures. Likewise, from the beginning, the essence is free from elaboration and without anything to grasp, the raw state is free from calculation and remains wide open and clear. Settling in a relaxed state is like untying a tangled rope. For the mind, without the bondage of right and wrong, good and bad, etc., release without attachment or grasping, and naturally remain in a relaxed state. Settling without correction is like a person imprisoned who only thinks of escaping, but if left alone, he settles comfortably. If the mind is bound by aims and desires, it becomes very unruly, such as scattering and excitement. Therefore, do not make any changes to the mind's natural state, but let it remain comfortably in its natural condition. In these instances, what need is there to mention discursive thoughts of virtue and non-virtue, even previous understanding is discursive thought.
