It is known that it is merely a designation and does not inherently exist, but is merely dependent arising. By understanding the nature of ultimate bodhicitta through these, and meditating on it, the root of existence is severed. As the Mind Commentary says: Therefore, the basis of all dharmas, peaceful and like illusion, destroys the baseless existence, and emptiness should always be meditated upon. By meditating on emptiness in this way, compassion naturally arises for sentient beings who have not realized it. From this, conventional bodhicitta is generated and one engages in practice, thereby manifesting the great non-abiding enlightenment, and as long as samsara exists, the activities of the Buddha will continuously arise through various means of taming beings according to their needs. In this regard, one should first train the mind with the four immeasurables, then generate the aspiration for bodhicitta. The practices of engaging in conduct should be gradually learned according to the general presentation of the Stages of the Path. The necessity of this is stated in the Mind Commentary: Through the effort of meditative equipoise, generate bodhicitta. For the purpose of accomplishing the benefit of oneself and others, there is no other method in samsara. The Buddhas have not seen any other method except for bodhicitta. Merely by generating bodhicitta, the accumulation of merit that is obtained, if it had form, would be more than filling the sky. Any being who, even for a moment, meditates on bodhicitta, the accumulation of merit of that being cannot be enumerated even by the Victorious Ones. And so forth, the benefits are extensively explained, which is the way to train in conventional bodhicitta. These are brief, and for more details, one should carefully listen to the Mind Commentary on Bodhicitta itself. Second, the instructions for practicing the meaning of meditation are: In a secluded place, relax the body and mind, and contemplate as follows: All phenomena that appear as external objects, and all phenomena included in the mind that grasps internally, are not created by Brahma, Ishvara, Vishnu, etc., as asserted by the tirthikas. Nor are they created by the marks carved by existence, as is popularly believed in Tibet. Nor are they produced from the aggregation of atoms, as asserted by the two Hearer schools, because these have already been refuted by the lords of reason. Brahmin

In the Dohas of the Great Siddha, it is said: Alas! Abandon whatever is spoken falsely and perversely, and let go of whatever you are attached to. Thus it is said. So, from where does it arise? It is thought that the mind itself has not realized its own true nature, has not grasped its own ground, and clings to self and other as two. There, due to the clinging thoughts, from beginningless samsara, defiled by habitual tendencies, accumulating virtuous and non-virtuous actions, various good and bad illusions appear, for example, in dreams, various good and bad things such as people, animals, houses, etc. appear, but they are only illusions defiled by sleep, and upon awakening, none of the good or bad can be established as real. It is just like that. In the previous text, it says: Whatever emanates from the mind, that is the very nature of manifestation. Are water and waves different? Thus it is said. So, is the mind itself established as real? It is thought that the mind, which is the present awareness of clarity and knowing, is nothing other than this, and when this is examined, color and shape, place and support, essence and identification, none can be established, it is like the sky. In the Mind Commentary, it says: This mind is merely a name, there is nothing other than a name. Merely a name is like consciousness, even the name is without self-nature. Inside or likewise outside, or even in the middle of the two, the Victorious Ones have not found the mind, therefore the mind is of the nature of illusion. Or the distinction of color and shape, or the apprehended and the apprehender, male, female, hermaphrodite, etc., the mind does not abide as an entity. In short, the Buddhas have not seen, nor will they see, possessing the nature of no self-nature, how could they see? As it is said, summarizing the meaning, for something that has no substance, because there is no cause, one cannot find it by searching for where it first arose from this hole, or when it arose at this time. In the end, when it ceases, it also goes to this place, and one cannot identify that this is the result of cessation. Even when abiding in the middle, it does not abide in any of the upper, middle, or lower parts of the inner body, or in any of the outer appearances, and it is unshowable, unspeakable, not corporeal, the nature of emptiness, which is separated from all identification, is like the sky. It is not that clarity ceases and becomes emptiness, but because of its self-luminous nature, the essence of clarity is emptiness, the nature of emptiness is clarity, inseparable.
