Since establishing the beginningless and endless cycle of samsara and nirvana requires contemplating the meaning of selflessness, by contemplating selflessness, one can turn away from the view of the perishable aggregate that clings to self and what belongs to self. Furthermore, due to the grasping of craving, the continuity of the aggregates is exhausted, and liberation is attained. The way of selflessness is that if there were a "self," it would have to arise from itself, from others, from both, or from any of the three times, but in reality, it does not arise from any of these. If there were a "self," it would have to be either the same as or different from the aggregates, but in reality, it is neither the same nor different from the aggregates. The phenomena that serve as the basis for imputation as a "person," such as the aggregates, elements, sense bases, etc., also cannot arise from themselves, from others, from both, or without a cause. Therefore, if one investigates and analyzes, all that is apprehended and the apprehender are not truly established as real. The appearance of impure habitual tendencies and distorted consciousness is also not truly established as real; they are like the manifestations of illusion and the forms in dreams. By negating the two selves, one can turn away from clinging to the reality and characteristics of apprehended and apprehender, but clinging to emptiness as the ultimate truth or viewing everything as non-existent is an incurable wrong view and must be abandoned. As it says in the Commentary on the Mind: "Unborn and emptiness, and what is called selflessness, is emptiness itself. Whatever inferior self is meditated upon, one is not meditating on that." In reality, all phenomena of apprehended and apprehender appear merely as interdependent arising, and are not merely emptiness. If one analyzes, there is not even a particle of inherently existing self-nature, so they cannot be identified or truly established. One should not merely view it as mind-only, as it says in the same text: "Whatever the Buddha taught as mind-only, was to dispel the fear of children, and not that itself." In short, the root of samsara is the co-emergent ignorance of clinging to self and what belongs to self. For the nature, causes, and effects of all objects and subjects, with co-emergent ignorance as the primary factor, one analyzes with reasoning such as "one and separate," thereby establishing emptiness and eliminating the extreme of existence. One establishes appearance through the reasoning of dependent arising, thereby eliminating the extreme of non-existence. The actual view is that appearance and emptiness are understood as a union, free from the two extremes of existence and non-existence. When establishing the nature of appearance, it is emptiness in which the nature or essence of appearance is not established in anything, and the manner of appearance is unceasing.

It is necessary for both appearance and what appears to arise inseparably. As stated in the Commentary on the Awakening Mind: 'Just as the sweetness of sugarcane and the heat of fire's nature, so too, the nature of all phenomena is considered to be emptiness.' And: 'Conventional truth is said to be emptiness, emptiness alone is conventional truth. Because without it, it cannot arise, just like something made and impermanent.' This is how it is. Regarding this, the pith instruction masters of both China and Tibet, first understand all phenomena of grasping and being grasped as their own mind. That mind, whether it exists, does not exist, is, is not, arises, ceases, etc., is not established in any identifiable essence, and thus establish its nature as emptiness. Finally, they settle into contemplating the nature of all phenomena, the expanse free from elaboration. Secondly, in general, meditation is not straying from the state of view to anything else. Moreover, as long as the state of view is not lost, abandon all objects and mental activities other than mindfulness and awareness, and settle into a natural state without fabrication, analysis, or thought, without meditating on anything. As stated in the Commentary on the Mind: 'The mind that is free from objects abides in the nature of space. To meditate on space is considered to be meditating on emptiness.' And so on. Moreover, to generate it in the continuum, it is necessary to have both the support of calm abiding and the reliance of insight. Calm abiding is: relying on conducive conditions in a secluded place, relying on the eight activities that abandon the five faults, generating the five experiences through the nine ways of abiding the mind, and maintaining that continuum, so that a bliss of extreme pliancy of body and mind arises, which is the calm abiding with characteristics included in the meditative state. Insight also involves first identifying clarity, then placing the mind in freedom from extremes, and finally generating certainty in the inexpressible, thereby cultivating the union of calm abiding and insight. Thirdly, in the state of equipoise like the sky, although all appearances are not established by nature, in the post-meditation state, when the way things appear is clearly manifest, like horses, elephants, etc., conjured by a magician, although they are not established in essence, when they appear clearly, the magician and the audience are similar in terms of how they appear, but in terms of the state, there is a difference between whether or not there is clinging to the self-characteristics of the horses and elephants. Similarly, ordinary people develop clinging to appearances, while yogis
