It is not necessary, and merely cultivating calm abiding cannot eliminate afflictions like some non-Buddhists. As stated in the Samadhiraja Sutra: "Although worldly people cultivate samadhi, their self-grasping does not cease. It further agitates the field of afflictions, like those with higher practices cultivating samadhi." So, what is the samadhi that actually attains liberation? If one individually understands the selflessness of phenomena, and individually analyzes and cultivates it, then one obtains the fruit of nirvana. Other causes cannot bring about cessation. Thus, having individually analyzed the selflessness of phenomena, and having cultivated the meaning of that analysis, it is said that one obtains the fruit of nirvana. Such selflessness, although without coarse or subtle distinctions from the perspective of its essence, becomes twofold through the distinction between phenomena and persons. As the venerable Chandrakirti said: "For the sake of liberating beings, this selflessness is taught as twofold, distinguished as phenomena and persons." This is as stated. These two are also included in the explanations of the scriptures. Although one must first establish the selflessness of phenomena, when cultivating, one must first cultivate the selflessness of persons. As stated in the Samadhiraja Sutra: "Just as your self-grasping is, having known that, apply the mind to all things. All phenomena are of that nature, completely pure like space. Through one, one knows all; through one, one sees all." Therefore, when cultivating the selflessness of persons, one must first identify the object to be negated, which is to be eliminated. As stated in the Bodhicharyavatara: "Without touching the object being examined, one does not grasp its non-existence." As stated, if one does not recognize the object to be negated, it is like shooting an arrow without seeing the target, or waging war without identifying the enemy. If the recognition of the object to be negated is too broad, one will fall into the extreme of annihilation; if it is too narrow, one will not be able to eliminate subtle objects to be negated, and one will fall into the extreme of permanence, which is extremely dangerous. As stated in the Root Wisdom: "If one views emptiness incorrectly, those of little wisdom will be destroyed. Just as a snake is wrongly grasped, or a mantra is wrongly applied." Therefore, knowing that it is difficult to fathom the depths of this Dharma with attachment, the Buddha's mind was reluctant to teach the Dharma.

It becomes like that, as it is said. Just as it is said in the Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita, because of clinging to 'I' and 'mine,' all sentient beings wander in samsara. The ultimate root of all faults is the co-emergent self-grasping, or the co-emergent clinging to 'I.' Generally, regarding the mind that clings to 'I am,' there are three ways: one distinguished by the true establishment of 'I,' one distinguished by the non-true establishment of 'I' or merely a name, imputed by conceptual thought, and one that clings to 'I am' without distinguishing between the two. Among these, the last is the valid cognition of conventional terms that merely posits 'I.' The middle one only arises in the mindstream up to the point of gaining certainty in the view of Madhyamaka, and does not arise in others. The first is the self-grasping of persons. Clinging to others as objects and grasping them as true is self-grasping of persons, but it is not co-emergent clinging to 'I.' Co-emergent clinging to 'I,' or the view of the aggregates, is the afflicted wisdom that focuses on the 'I' of one's own continuum and grasps it as inherently existent. It is produced by its own cause, a subtle grasping at the self of phenomena. As the protector Nagarjuna said: As long as there is clinging to the aggregates, so long as there is clinging to 'I.' When there is clinging to 'I,' there is also karma. From karma, there is also birth. Like that. It itself is the root of samsara, so if the object of its clinging or the object of attachment is not refuted, self-grasping cannot be abandoned. As the Lord of Knowledge said: Without refuting this object, it is not possible to abandon it. Therefore, clinging to a person as true, or clinging to 'I' as true, or clinging to a being as true, the object of its attachment is the true establishment of a person, the true establishment of 'I,' the true establishment of a being, and so on, so it must be refuted. And refuting them is precisely seeing them as non-true. Because after ascertaining the non-truth of a person and familiarizing oneself with it, clinging to a person as true will be reversed. For these reasons, in order to first show the appearance and the way of clinging to be refuted, it is said as an experiential instruction: From the previous state of equipoise, in the clear water that has not been disturbed, like a small fish darting about, with subtle wisdom, intelligently examine the nature of the person of the meditator. Thus it is said.
