The Fourth Volume of the Instructions Treasury. The Fourth Volume of the Instructions Treasury. The Extensive Explanation of the Root of the Great Seal Oral Tradition of the Precious Gelden Kagyu, The Lamp That Clarifies As Well. The Extensive Explanation of the Root of the Great Seal Oral Tradition of the Precious Gelden Kagyu, The Lamp That Clarifies As Well, is completed. Namo Mahamudra (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Chinese meaning: Homage, Great Seal). The wisdom of all Buddhas throughout the universe, manifesting through the dance of holding saffron robes, I respectfully prostrate to the lotus feet of the venerable guru who possesses the three kindnesses. The essence of the minds of the Buddhas of the three times, the meaning of the heart of the ocean of sutras and tantras, the path traversed by all the empowered siddhas, I shall explain the Great Seal, The Lamp That Clarifies As Well. Here, in explaining the oral tradition Great Seal instructions of the learned and accomplished holy beings, there are three: the activity of engaging in composition, the actual explanation of the composed instructions, and the dedication of the merit arising from the composition. First, in order to demonstrate conformity with the noble conduct of oneself, etc., homage is paid to a special place, and in order to bring the composition to completion, the vow to compose is generally stated: Namo Mahamudra (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Chinese meaning: Homage, Great Seal). The Great Seal, the all-pervading nature of all things, indivisible, inexpressible, the vajra realm of the mind, the all-encompassing lord who reveals it nakedly, the peerless guru's feet, I respectfully bow. Having gathered the essence from the ocean of sutras, tantras, and instructions, the Gelden Kagyu, who teaches excellently, writes the oral tradition Great Seal instructions of the accomplished supreme Dharma Vajra, father and son. Thus, since the meaning of these two verses is not difficult to understand, it is not written in detail. Second, this has three parts: preparation, main part, and conclusion. The actual explanation of the composed instructions, this has three parts: preparation, main part, and conclusion. First, to enter the teachings and the Great Vehicle, as a gateway and foundation, not just lip service, refuge and bodhicitta should be diligently practiced. Seeing the nature of the mind also depends on accumulating merit and purifying obscurations, so the confession of downfalls with the hundred-syllable mantra a hundred thousand times, and a hundred prostrations.

First, perform a great deal of (good deeds), and repeatedly pray from the depths of your heart to all the Buddhas of the three times, and to the inseparable root guru. That is to say, the great scholar Shantipa, the master Golden Island, Jowo Rinpoche Lhachik, and many other wise and accomplished beings of the holy land of India, also distinguish between inner and outer through pure refuge. In accordance with this, Sakya Pandita also said, "Without refuge, one is not a Buddhist." Therefore, it is necessary to diligently integrate refuge into the mindstream. The holy one also said, "Entrust your body, speech, and mind to the Three Jewels, and blessings will naturally arise, Dingriwa." Therefore, Lord Shantideva also said, "Once the mind of enlightenment arises, in an instant, those wretched beings imprisoned in the prison of samsara will be called the sons of the Sugatas, and the world, including gods and humans, will prostrate to them." Jowo Rinpoche also said, "Those who wish to enter the Great Vehicle Dharma, that which dispels darkness and pacifies suffering, the mind of enlightenment like the sun and moon, is worth striving to generate even through eons." This is the gateway to the Great Vehicle. Moreover, in the Ornament of Clear Realization, it is also said, "Lord of Secrets, the omniscient wisdom arises from the root of compassion, arises from the continuum of the mind of enlightenment, and is the culmination of skillful means." As it is said, this is the pillar of the Great Vehicle. In general, the lineage masters of the various schools in the Land of Snows, before giving profound instructions or practicing, all refer to refuge, bodhicitta, mandala, and Vajrasattva guru yoga as the four preliminaries, and there are no different practices. In particular, for the supreme disciple of the unsurpassed yoga tantra, the master of yoga Milarepa, he also first taught and practiced loving-kindness, compassion, the mind of enlightenment, renunciation, karma and its effects, death and impermanence, etc. As it is said, "Because of fear of the eight unfree states, practice the faults of impermanent samsara, be diligent in the law of karma and its effects, place hope in refuge in the Three Jewels, tame the mind through skillful means of bodhicitta, cut off the continuum of habitual patterns and obscurations, regard all appearances as illusion, now there is no fear of the three lower realms."
