When, through strength, body and mind are extremely tamed, and one obtains the samadhi of bliss, then one has obtained the heat of the path of joining. Some Kagyu lineage masters have classified the path of Mahamudra into four yogas: one-pointedness, because the mind focuses on one object; freedom from elaboration, because the mind realizes freedom from elaboration; one taste, because appearance and mind are realized as one taste; and no meditation, because there is no meditation with characteristics. Samatha's Je Götsangpa considers the first to be aspiration, the second to be the path of seeing, the third from the second bhumi to the seventh bhumi, and the fourth to be the nature of purity, etc. Zhang Rinpoche said, "Mahamudra is decided at once. It is a mistake for the ignorant to cling to the stages and paths. However, for the sake of the ignorant's delight, the stages and paths of the characteristic vehicle are also solemnly established here." He said that the way of establishing is the same as that of Je Götsangpa. Some scholars do not agree with establishing freedom from elaboration first, because there are no twelve hundred qualities in the subsequent attainment. In response to this objection, Zhang Rinpoche said, "The garuda chick is complete inside the eggshell. When the eggshell is broken, it soars into the sky. The qualities of the three kayas are complete in the mind. When the illusory body is destroyed, it benefits others." So he said. Jigten Gonpo said, "If you can find a scripture that proves that your pervasiveness is definite, I will give you a good horse. What is said in the Sutra of the Ten Bhumis is in terms of future lives." It seems that it is necessary to say this kind of thing. Jetsun Sakya Pandita said in response to the question of Gelong Namkha Bum, "The teachings of Dritag and Chagya are not in accordance with either the sutras or the vinaya. Is this not the correct path? I hope that this thought will not spread elsewhere." So he said. However, the actions and biographies of the noble beings are beyond the realm of ordinary people, and the sins of relying on the Dharma and the holy beings are extremely terrible, so please abandon the biased thoughts and let the pure appearances pervade the light of jewels, Dharma Banner prays. The third is like this: The learned renunciate who speaks thus is called Lodrö Chökyi Gyaltsen. May all beings be separated from the two extremes of peace through virtue.

May I quickly attain Buddhahood through this path! Thus, the manner of fulfilling the vow, and dedicating the virtue of the composition for the sake of all beings to be victorious from the battlefield of the two obscurations. Thus said: The supreme essence churned from the ocean of Sutras and Tantras, the essential intent of all Tibetan and Chinese scholars and accomplished ones, the path traversed by all accomplished and holy beings without exception, the sun of the Great Seal teachings is here and now. Having been led astray by the intoxicating liquor of ignorance and delusion, trapped within the walls of the terrifying prison of existence, sentient beings tormented by the three sufferings, this is a place of rest, a garden of joy. The eye that points out the good path to all beings, the tradition upheld by great and holy beings, the clear and beautiful form of the Great Seal, unadulterated, this is indeed a jewel mirror that reveals. Within this, the fetters that bind the eight worldly concerns are severed, in a solitary place, in the bliss of meditative absorption, for the many fortunate ones who enjoy whatever they desire, it is also a lama who points out the unerring good path. Whatever collection of virtues arises from effort in this way, like a white lotus opened by a stream of cool rays, whatever supremely white virtue is accumulated, is dedicated to the great enlightenment for the sake of liberating all mothers. Through its power, may all beings, the excellent vase of their minds filled with the nectar of the union of Sutra and Tantra, the well-written Great Seal, may they enjoy the great bliss of union! Thus, this "Illuminating Lamp," which extensively explains the root of the Great Seal of the oral tradition of the Gelug lineage, was quickly written down in the great Dharma hall of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery (Shigatse) by the renunciate Lobsang Chökyi Gyaltsen, who has reached the far shore of the ocean of the definitive conclusions of each of the Great Seals, at the urging of his own disciple, Gendun Gyaltsen, the master of the ten subjects, who, having gained certainty in this path and making practice the essence, offered the flower of practice adorned with the husk of the eight worldly concerns, earnestly requesting that the author himself provide an extensive and definitive explanation of this root text, clarifying the essential points to be practiced, measuring them against the valid support of scripture and reason, and adorning them with the instructions of the oral tradition. May this also become a victory banner for the precious teachings, never to decline!
