There will be an (enlightenment) coming. As it is said. Furthermore, if the beings to be tamed nowadays are guarded through the six ways of settling the mind, it will become the king of instructions. How to guard? Settle like the sun free from clouds. Settle like a great garuda soaring in the sky. Settle like a ship on the great ocean. Settle like a child looking at a temple. Settle like a bird flying in the sky without a trace. Settle like spreading cotton. Through these ways of settling the mind, yoga will become meaningful. That is to say, first, for example, like the sun without clouds, it exists extremely bright and clear, similarly, the self-nature of the mind is luminous, without being obscured by the conceptual thoughts of clinging to characteristics and agitation and dullness, etc., and abides. Second, for example, when a garuda flies in the sky, it does not need to flap its wings or make any effort, but flies naturally, similarly, the mind should not be too tense or too relaxed, but should have a tense clarity in the heart, and temporarily relax, without leaving the scope of mindfulness. Third, for example, like the great ocean being moved by the wind, even if a few waves appear on the surface, it cannot shake the ocean, similarly, when the mind is placed on the object of focus, even if subtle conceptual thoughts shake it slightly, the gross conceptual thoughts will not shake and abide. Fourth, for example, when a child looks at a temple, he does not engage in conceptual thinking about the subtle parts of the paintings, nor is he distracted by the obvious parts, similarly, when the mind is placed on the object of focus, whatever arises as the object of the five sense consciousnesses, whether it is pleasing or displeasing, do not engage in conceptual thinking and attachment and aversion, but focus single-pointedly on the object of focus. Fifth, for example, like a bird flying in the sky without leaving a trace, no matter what kind of feeling arises, whether it is happiness, suffering, or equanimity, do not let it be controlled by any of the three poisons of attachment, aversion, and ignorance, but abide equally. Sixth, for example, like spread cotton, it is soft, light, and relaxed, similarly, the mind that abides equally, free from the manifestation of the three poisons and the coarse touch of agitation and dullness, thus abides equally. After guarding in this way, what kind of result will occur? Not obscured by any real clinging, pure and clear, and not clinging to any tangible object.

Saying (in verse): Empty and clear like the sky, whatever appears is bright and clear. Thus, by cultivating, the nature of equanimity is not obscured by anything, it is clear and extremely bright, and since no tangible object is established, it is like the empty and clear sky. Furthermore, no matter what arises from the five objects of good and evil, it appears clearly and brightly like an image in a clear mirror. This is the experiential appearance that is free from the recognition of this being this and that being not that. No matter how stable such a samadhi is, if it is not seized by the bliss of physical and mental pliancy, it is a one-pointed desire mind, and the samadhi seized by it is called tranquility. It is the source of many qualities such as clairvoyance and magical powers. In particular, the noble paths of the three vehicles are also attained by relying on this. So, how should this path be recognized in terms of its own nature? It is said: Thus, the nature of mind, although seen excellently by direct perception, cannot be grasped and pointed out as this. Whatever appears, do not grasp, but rest freely. This is the key instruction placed in the hands of the Buddhas and entrusted. Nowadays, most of the great meditators of the snowy mountains proclaim with the same view. Although this is the case, this method is a wonderful means for beginners to abide in the mind, a practice, and a way to recognize the conventional truth of the mind. Thus spoke the Dharma Banner. Thus it is said. Now, I vow to explain separately how to recognize the nature of mind. Now, regarding the nature of mind, how to recognize it? In the manner of holding the wisdom of all the Buddhas, I will declare the essential instructions of the root guru, which dispel the darkness of my own deluded mind. Thus it is said, because it is easy for others to understand, and the manner of making vows is different, there is no fault of repetition with the previous ones. Therefore, here there is a general explanation of the differences in the ways of recognizing, and a summary of their essence. Firstly, the Teacher said that if one realizes the mind, one is a Buddha, so there is no need to seek a Buddha elsewhere. Saraha also said: The nature of mind alone is the seed of all things, from which arise samsara and nirvana, bestowing all desired fruits, like the mind of a wish-fulfilling jewel.
