and extractions of essence, and instructions on the view of profound Madhyamaka, and so on. Although various different names are assigned to the meaning of the pith instructions, if they are well examined by those skilled in reasoning and scripture that correctly distinguish between definitive and interpretable meanings, they do not contradict each other like heat and cold, but converge on a single intention. As it says in the "Stainless Light Sutra": "Just as a precious thing is called a jewel, the differences are different, different, spoken of according to the power of place and place, there is no difference in jewels at all." That is how it is said. So, what is the order of meditating on Mahamudra? It is said: Therefore, in this case, from the perspective of view, seeking meditation, and from the perspective of meditation, seeking view, of the two methods, this is according to the latter method. That is to say, either of the two methods can be used. However, Lord Shantideva said: "With the superior insight that is fully endowed with calm abiding, knowing that it destroys the afflictions, one should first seek calm abiding." Also, in the "Heap of Jewels Sutra" it is said: "By abiding in morality, one obtains samadhi, and having obtained samadhi, one should also meditate on wisdom." As such, the instructions are the method of seeking view from the perspective of meditation. If that is the case, then what is the method of meditating on calm abiding at the beginning? In this regard, there are two parts: preliminary practices and the main practice. The first is: Lord Maitreya said: "The wise one, in whatever place the object of practice is, well found, a good place, a good land, a good friend, and a yogi, endowed with resources." In such a place, abiding in pure morality, being content with few desires, the limbs or accumulations of calm abiding, etc., etc., and the six preliminary practices must be practiced, as it is said: "On the seat of meditative bliss, having the seven key points of the body, purify the nine rounds of breath, clearly distinguish between the pure and impure of awareness, endowed with a pure virtuous mind, taking refuge and generating bodhicitta as a preliminary, meditate on the profound guru yoga, make fervent prayers a hundred times, etc., and then dissolve the guru into oneself." The meaning is that the pure virtuous mind is the mind of enlightenment, and the profound guru yoga is the guru yoga that completes the parts of the path, like placing it separately, and the others are easy to understand. Thus, the preliminary

First, explaining the method of cultivating abiding mind by making preparations beforehand. In that dim appearance, do not make any adjustments or modifications to hopes, doubts, and other conceptual thoughts. Abide without wavering, slightly. It is not like fainting or sleeping, blocking attention, but rather, erect a sentinel of undistracted mindfulness, gather the flowing intellectual awareness. On the nature of being aware and clear, focus wholeheartedly, and look nakedly. Whatever conceptual thoughts arise, recognize them as they are. Or, like a knife sharpener, whatever conceptual thoughts arise, cut them off completely. At the moment of abiding after cutting off, do not lose mindfulness, release relaxedly. Focus wholeheartedly, release relaxedly, the abiding of the mind is there. As it is said, and as others have said, like the mind bound by a rope, releasing it will liberate it, without a doubt. As it is said, release without distraction. Whatever conceptual thoughts arise, when looking at their nature, they naturally vanish, appearing as emptiness. Similarly, when examining the abiding state, it is unobscured, empty and clear, bright. It is called "the mixture of seeing, abiding, and movement," and whatever conceptual thoughts arise, do not block them, recognize the movement, and by doing so, abide in its nature, like a crow on a boat striving to fly, similar to the example of flying. Just as a crow flying from a boat circles in all directions and then lands back there again. Practice in this way. Thus it is said. Here, the nature of the samadhi to be cultivated is the samadhi with the sharpness of clarity and the two limbs of one-pointed non-conceptualization. Such a characteristic of calm abiding arises from the one-pointed samadhi of desire mind that has not been equally placed. That is what the Protector Maitreya said: Abandoning the five faults, cultivating the eight applications, arises from the cause of reliance. Thus it is said that the nine abidings of the mind, arising from the reliance of abandoning the five faults and cultivating the eight applications, are accomplished. These nine abidings of the mind are also accomplished by the six powers in the "Compendium of Topics" by the noble Asanga, and are said to possess four attentions. So, what kind of object should one focus on in order to cultivate samadhi? In general, the Blessed One, for the sake of cultivating flawless samadhi, has objects that are pervasive, examining various
