Thinking about the results of actions, one should diligently perform even small virtues with a joyful mind, without despising them. Secondly, contemplating the suffering of samsara: Gyaltsap Jampa said, "Just as there is no fragrance in impure things, there is no happiness in the five realms. Its suffering is constant, like the sensation of touch from snow and sea salt." Thus, no matter where one is born in the high or low realms of samsara, one never transcends the nature of the three sufferings. The three extremely unbearable lower realms are: the heat and cold of hell, the hunger and thirst of pretas, and the suffering of animals, who are tormented by ignorance, servitude, and exploitation, like boils appearing on top of hot sores, suffering upon suffering. As it says in the Letter to a Friend: "Seeing, hearing, remembering, reading, and making images of hell also generate fear. What need is there to mention those who experience the unbearable ripening results?" Thus, there is no room for endurance. Even if one is born in the higher realms, like the sun between clouds, one may temporarily experience some physical and mental happiness, but it is not permanent and is subject to change. As Shantideva said, "Having repeatedly come and gone in the higher realms, and having enjoyed much happiness, after death one falls into the lower realms, into long-lasting, unbearable sufferings." Thus, even if one is born in the higher realms, humans still experience the eight sufferings of birth, aging, sickness, and death, and the asuras experience fighting, while the gods experience death, decline, and falling. Not only are they tormented by various sufferings, but just as a prisoner who is released from one prison is not guaranteed not to be thrown into another, one has not gained the certainty of not falling from the higher realms into the lower realms. Therefore, one can never escape samsara and will never be separated from the thorn of suffering. The root of this is the fault of attachment to the five desirable qualities. For example, the teacher Vasubandhu said, "The deer is harmed by sound alone, the elephant is destroyed by touch, the butterfly by form, the fish is killed by taste, and the bee dies from attachment to smell. These are lost by a single cause. But humans possess all five desires, constantly destroying them day and night. How can they attain happiness?" Thus, Potowa said, "Our desired

After pursuing the five pleasures, (you) said that from beginningless time, this cycle of existence has wandered endlessly, and there is no greater destruction and loss than this. Therefore, it is important to always be weary of desires and to contemplate the general suffering of samsara, and especially the suffering of conditioned existence. As it is said: The hundred faults of samsara, the conduct of a Bodhisattva, although many, are feared by suffering, and even animals want liberation. From the happiness of contaminated feelings, aversion arises, even in outsiders. Therefore, this conditioned nature, this contaminated aggregate of grasping, is the achievement of suffering and the vessel of achievement, like disease, tumors, and pain. If you focus on this and meditate, ignorance will waver. As it is said. Third, explaining the measure of the arising of renunciation: Having become accustomed to this, one does not generate even a moment's longing for the prosperity of samsara, and if the mind seeks liberation day and night, then renunciation has arisen. As it is said, like this, repeatedly familiarizing oneself with the general and specific sufferings of samsara in one's own mind-stream, relying on it, represented by the happiness of gods and humans, for any perfection of worldly existence, just as a person with vomiting sickness sees food, even the thought of "If I could get something like this" does not arise in the mind-stream for even a moment, and day and night, one always thinks that if one could obtain the happiness of liberation and nirvana, which is liberation from the unreliable cycle of existence contained in the contaminated aggregates of grasping, right now, this thought of seeking, which cannot be diverted by other causes, is strong and lasting, and arises effortlessly, then, at that time, the virtue corresponding to liberation, the pure thought of renunciation that is not artificial, arises in one's own mind-stream. That is what is said. Gyamawa Lodrö Gyaltsen also said that thinking like this, aversion arises to all the desires of this life. This aversion increases to the point that aversion arises to the entire cycle of existence. If this happens, then it can be said that one has grasped the path to liberation. Without this aversion, no matter what one possesses, one cannot grasp the path to liberation. If this aversion arises, then one can truly enter the ranks of practitioners. As it is said. Second, explaining Bodhicitta, divided into two parts: the reasons for generating Bodhicitta and the
