It is said that passing away from death and going to the lower realms is like the great earth, and going to the happy realms from there is like the dust picked up by the tip of a fingernail, so it can be understood. From the point of view of analogy, it is difficult to obtain, just as throwing beans against the wall of a glass house will cause them to stick, and it is rare for mustard seeds to stick to the tip of a needle. It is difficult to obtain leisure and endowment from animals and the like. Even if you obtain leisure, there is no time, because you will surely die. The Suhrllekha says: "Life is subject to many harms, like a bubble struck by the wind, it is especially impermanent, it is wonderful to be able to wake up from breathing in and out." Because the conditions for survival are few and the conditions for death are many, it is very easy to perish like a bubble of water struck by the wind. It is a wonderful thing to be able to wake up in the morning after falling asleep tonight. The Bodhicaryavatara says: "Day and night without stopping, this life is constantly decreasing, and there is no new addition, how can I not die?" As it is said, one day has passed, two days have passed, one mouthful of food has been eaten, two mouthfuls have been eaten, one sip of drink has been drunk, two sips have been drunk, and one is getting closer and closer to death, so one will die quickly and there is no time. At the time of death, nothing is of benefit except the Dharma, so practice the Dharma. And practice it quickly, because death is uncertain. Do not be controlled by the body, possessions, relatives, or friends, but practice pure Dharma right now. The Compendium says: "The next life and the future life, whichever comes first is uncertain, do not strive for the next life, but strive for the future life." Thus it is said. Therefore, the main cause of letting life go to waste is forgetting the impermanence of death. Je Rinpoche said: "The fault of not meditating on death is that although everyone thinks that they will eventually die, they think that they will not die today, and they will not die today, and they cling to the side of not dying in their minds, even until the time of death. If you do not apply an antidote to this, you will be obscured by this kind of thought, and the thought of wanting to stay in this life will arise, thinking that you need this and that, only pursuing the happiness of this life, and thinking only of eliminating suffering, thereby forgetting the future life and attaining all liberation.

For those engaged in great matters, if such a thought does not arise, they will not be allowed to enter the Dharma. Even if they are allowed to engage in listening, contemplating, and meditating, etc., it is only for the sake of this life, and whatever good deeds they do are weak in power and will be associated with misdeeds, sins, and downfalls, so it is important to avoid mixing with the causes of bad destinies. Even if they are made to practice with the aim of the next life, they will not be able to prevent the laziness of procrastination, thinking, "I'll practice later," and they will waste time with sleep, drowsiness, idle talk, food and drink, etc., and will not be able to practice properly with great diligence. Not only will they not be able to practice properly, but because they are focused on the prosperity of this life, their afflictions and the misdeeds caused by them will become more and more serious, turning their backs on the nectar of the Dharma and leading them to bad destinies. What could be worse than that? The Four Hundred Verses says, "Who possesses the three realms, but has no lord of death over himself, if he sleeps comfortably, what could be worse than that?" Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior says, "Not realizing that I must abandon everything, for the sake of friends and enemies, I have committed various kinds of sins." The benefits of meditating on death: If a genuine mind of meditating on death arises, for example, if it is certain that one will die today or tomorrow, then one will see that even relatives and friends cannot accompany one, and thus one will turn away from attachment to them, and through giving up and other means, one will naturally want to take the essence. Similarly, one will see that all efforts to pursue worldly things such as gain and honor are meaningless, and thus one will turn away from misdeeds, and by accumulating good deeds such as taking refuge and keeping precepts, one will elevate oneself to a sacred position and lead all beings there as well. What could be more important than that? Therefore, it is praised by many examples. The Great Nirvana Sutra says, "Among farmers, the autumn harvest is the best; among footprints, the footprint of an ox is the best; among all thoughts, the thought of impermanence and death is the best. These thoughts eliminate the desires, ignorance, and pride of the three realms." Similarly, all afflictions
