Yi. There is no way to pacify the pursuit of happiness and its fruits. Attachment to worldly existence also binds sentient beings. Therefore, one must first seek renunciation. It is said that although there are many kinds of Dharma that those who desire liberation should practice, in order to attain Buddhahood, it is necessary to generate a pure renunciation in one's mindstream. Moreover, this is not merely the desire to be liberated from the three lower realms, but the desire to transcend the entirety of samsara. If one does not generate a strong sense of renunciation in one's mindstream, then in the great ocean of suffering of samsara, although there is no true happiness, one becomes attached to the fruits of contaminated happiness like a fly attracted to impure smells, and one pursues them. This perverse and evil thought cannot be pacified by any means. If it is not pacified, attachment to worldly pleasures, like honey on the edge of a razor, will bind all sentient beings wandering in the six realms tightly to samsara with the noose of craving. Therefore, those who desire liberation must first recognize that all worldly pleasures and wealth are the source of suffering, and then generate the pure thought of wanting to renounce them. That is what it means. The way in which worldly existence binds one to samsara is explained in the Pramāṇavārttika: "Although ignorance is said to be the cause of worldly existence, It is not said that craving itself is already explained, Because it causes the continuation to arise, It is not born from karma because it is without interval, If it exists, it exists; if it does not exist, it does not exist." And "Craving is, if it exists, it is born again." So it is said. This is what the venerable Mañjuśrī said: If one does not initially generate sadness and renunciation towards all of samsara, then whatever one does, such as hearing, thinking, and meditating, will not go beyond being the cause of samsara and the lower realms. Therefore, one should temporarily put aside profound practices such as generation and completion stages and strive to generate renunciation. If one does not become accustomed to the object and aspect of renunciation by relying on mindfulness and awareness, then all virtuous deeds will be controlled by the attachment to appearances and will become the cause of samsara alone. Therefore, one should put aside the so-called profound secret mantra instructions and first generate experience in renunciation and bodhicitta. This is the essential point of the advice given to Je Rinpoche.

Therefore, if there is no pure renunciation for all of samsara, then no matter what you do, such as properly guarding celibacy, training the mind in listening, contemplating, and meditating, entering the mandala of powerful secret mantras, receiving empowerment, practicing offerings, meditating on the generation and completion stages, etc., it will not become a seed of liberation, because you only rely on the happiness and results of contaminated things. Jowo said: Even if you abide in the three vows and are pure, if your mind does not arise from the three realms of samsara, you will again create the cause of samsara. Even if you strive day and night for the virtue of the three doors, if you do not know how to dedicate it to perfect enlightenment, you will be drawn by mere inverted thoughts. Even if you are a learned, virtuous, teaching, and meditating person, if your mind does not turn away from the eight worldly concerns, then whatever you do will go towards the desires of this life, and you will not find the path of the next life. Also, before Jowo passed away, the yogi Chakri Chok asked: When Jowo passes away, may I meditate? Jowo said: It is a bad deed, abandon it. Then he asked: Then may I teach? He said the same thing. Then he asked: Then may I sometimes teach and sometimes meditate? He said the same thing. Then he asked: Then what should I do? Jowo said: Abandon this life. All the lamas of the lineage, such as Dromtönpa, also said the same thing, and by putting it into practice, both purposes are completely fulfilled. Secondly, there are two ways to generate renunciation: to reverse the appearance of this life, and to reverse the appearance of the next life. The first is: leisure and fortune are difficult to find, life has no time to spare, by familiarizing yourself with it in your mind, you can reverse the appearance of this life. It is said: By being separated from the eight unfavorable conditions of inner and outer, and having the eight leisures that have time to practice Dharma, and possessing this support with the ten fortunes of self and others, you can accomplish all the temporary and ultimate complete happiness, therefore it is of great significance, and it is difficult to obtain in terms of cause, number, and example, and even the support that is obtained only once, life does not increase, but there is constant decrease, so you cannot stay in this world for a long time, you must die quickly, and there is no certainty when you will die, and at the time of death, except for practicing pure Dharma, you strive hard to obtain the eight worldly concerns such as gain, respect, and fame.
