Strive to eliminate distractions through focus, perspective, conduct, etc. Diligently apply effort to prevent obstacles such as dullness and agitation. When meditation is free of faults, learn to not act when effort is applied. Relying on the six powers: the power of hearing 1, the power of thinking 2, the power of mindfulness 3, the power of awareness 4, the power of diligence 5, and the power of familiarity 6. The first power accomplishes the first stage of mind-abiding, the second accomplishes the second, the third accomplishes the third and fourth, the fourth accomplishes the fifth and sixth, the fifth accomplishes the seventh and eighth, and the sixth accomplishes the ninth. The four mental engagements are: Forcefully engaging 1, Intermittently engaging 2, Uninterruptedly engaging 3, Effortlessly engaging 4. During the first and second stages of mind-abiding, engagement is through the first mental engagement. From the third to the seventh, it is through the second. During the eighth, it is through the third. The ninth stage is engaged through the manner of the fourth. The nine stages of mind-abiding are: mind-placement, continuous placement, close placement, very close placement, taming, pacifying, very pacifying, single-pointed concentration, and equanimity. The second is explained according to the instruction lineage's view, dividing it into five experiences: The first is the experience of the mind being agitated, like a waterfall on a steep cliff. The second is the experience of attainment, like a river in a narrow gorge. The third is the experience of habituation, like a slowly flowing river. The fourth is the experience of stability, like an ocean free from waves. The fifth is the experience of stability reaching its culmination, abiding in clarity and stillness, unshaken by any circumstances, like a lamp undisturbed by the wind. If one is able to explain and is interested, these situations can be explained in detail as they appear elsewhere. Second, regarding the instructions on higher seeing (vipassanā), there are three aspects: how to meditate on the selflessness of the person, how to meditate on the selflessness of phenomena, and introducing their meaning. First, the root of all impure views in the world, such as the twenty mountains of the view of the aggregates of fear, is the clinging to the self of the person. So, what is this self? It is the innate clinging to "I" that all sentient beings possess. There are two main methods for observing and meditating on the selflessness of this person: investigation and placement. In reality, both need to be combined, but if distinguished by what is primary, then the investigation meditation

Through reasoning such as the Vajra Splinter, one realizes the selflessness of causes, and through analyzing results, such as existence, non-existence, arising, and cessation, one realizes the selflessness of results. Even from the perspective of abiding meditation, initially, if the self of a person were inherently established, it would have to be established as either one with or different from the aggregates, but since it is not established in that way, it is merely nominally labeled as 'I' based on the collection of aggregates. However, in ultimate reality, there is no inherent establishment, and it is necessary to first generate a definite understanding of this. Secondly, there are three aspects: non-grasping, non-clinging, and general negation. First, just as the self is not established, similarly, all the objects that are grasped as belonging to the self, such as the external environment and internal aggregates and elements, are also produced from the aggregation of particles, so the gross is not established. If those particles are analyzed, they become partless, so the subtle is not established either. In short, all phenomena are merely imputed by conceptual thought, and there is not even a particle of anything that is truly established from its own side. For example, a pot is merely suddenly imputed by the consciousness that grasps the pot, because the basis of the pot is not established, just as the consciousness that grasps the pot does not arise before the pot exists. Secondly, the various consciousnesses that grasp objects as they appear also arise in dependence on objects, so they are not truly established. For example, just as dream appearances are false, so too is the dream consciousness that grasps them. Similarly, the consciousness that is the object-possessor, which depends on the object that is not established by its own nature, is also not truly established. Thirdly, All extremes of elaboration, such as grasper and grasped, existence and non-existence, being and non-being, have already been negated, and what remains is merely the general aspect of non-elaboration and the self-knowing, self-illuminating awareness, which are also not truly established, because there is no third category of knowable things that is neither existent nor non-existent, and because from its own side, all elaboration is completely pacified. If these are thoroughly investigated through cause-and-effect analysis, etc., it will be like the seed mentioned earlier. Thirdly, as a result of such analysis, from the perspective of conventional appearance, all phenomena arise from their respective causes and conditions in dependence on each other, so they are not non-existent. From the perspective of ultimate reality, they are selfless, without intrinsic nature, without causal
