Only suffering descends. There is no one to blame; everything is equally unreal. Even hoping for help is futile, so all sentient beings should be placed in unsurpassed enlightenment. Since I do not have that ability now, I must first practice profound methods, such as meditation, and learn the vast conduct of a Bodhisattva, which is the cause of attaining Buddhahood. This is the main thought. As a branch, take the suffering of others and its causes upon oneself, and give one's own happiness and its causes to others. Furthermore, this can be combined with exhaling and inhaling, and to clarify the object, one can visualize the appearance of white and black light being emitted and absorbed, but the most important thing is not to be separated from great compassion without hope or fear. In general, for those of lesser capacity, the instruction of the seven-cause-and-effect is taught, and for those of greater capacity, the exchange of self and others is taught, forcibly training in Bodhicitta. The reason why this must be done before the view instruction is that it is said in the Compendium Sutra: "As long as the roots of virtue are not fully perfected, one should not contemplate that sacred emptiness." Therefore, it should be known that the supreme or excellent accumulation of merit is the thought of exceeding Bodhicitta. The second part is divided into three: generating calm abiding based on a support, seeking insight based on reliance, and combining the two in practice. The first part is divided into three: establishing the key points of the body, instructing the method of settling the mind, and recognizing the experiences that arise from it. The first part is: on a comfortable cushion, prepare meditation cushions and other accessories in advance. Sit in the lotus position with legs crossed, hands in meditative mudra. Straighten the spine, press the Adam's apple with the throat, place the tongue against the upper palate, and look without opening or closing at the space in front of the tip of the nose. Learn to integrate the mind and the place simply by establishing the key points of the body with a posture that is neither too tight nor too loose. After establishing the body posture in this way, breathe naturally, without intentionally exhaling, inhaling, or holding the breath, and count naturally for about twenty-one times. The second part is divided into three: calm abiding with a support, calm abiding without a support, and abiding in the nature of reality. The first part is to take impure objects, pieces of wood, or small stones as the object of focus, and without contracting or expanding the mind, simply abide attentively. When drowsiness occurs, cut off distractions and again abide on the object of focus, in a manner that is neither too tight nor too loose...

Like threading a needle, avoid being distracted. Arrange pure deity images, or especially a Shakyamuni Buddha image of appropriate size and proportion, at a suitable distance in front of you. When the mind is sinking, focus on the crown of the head; when the mind is agitated, focus on the lotus posture; when the mind is calm, focus on the heart. The method of placement is as before. The second method is: after becoming somewhat accustomed to having an object of focus, instead of actually placing these objects of focus, mentally visualize such an object and focus on it. This is called having an object with parts, that is, focusing on each part such as the face and hands; and having a complete object, that is, focusing on the overall appearance of the entire complete form. First become accustomed to the former, then learn the latter. The third method is: without focusing on any of these objects of focus, but with an attitude of emptiness, let go without any modification. In this way, until all the waves of conceptual thought such as subject and object, what is to be cultivated and who is cultivating, dissolve into the ocean of the Alaya consciousness, diligently strive to cultivate the samadhi of calm abiding. Identifying the experiences that arise from these three methods has two approaches: the perspective of the scriptures and the perspective of pith instructions. According to the first perspective, by relying on the eight applications that abandon the five faults, with the six powers, in the state of application as a basis, at the end of accomplishing the nine stages of abiding of the mind, one should achieve unwavering stability of pliancy. Among these, the five faults to be abandoned are: As stated in the Madhyāntavibhāga (Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes): 'Laziness 1 and instructions 2, forgetfulness and sinking 3 and agitation, non-application 4 and application 5, these are considered the five faults.' As it is said, laziness includes sloth such as sleep, attachment to bad deeds, and indulging in pleasure, these three. Sinking includes gross sinking, which is the loss of clear awareness of the object, resulting in a dullness where the object of focus becomes unclear; and subtle sinking, which is when there is clarity, but the strength of holding is weak, these two. Agitation includes gross agitation, which is excessive attachment to external objects, to the point that it cannot be suppressed even with antidotes; and subtle agitation, which is not abiding in a state of immovability, but slightly scattering, these two. To abandon these faults, one needs to rely on the eight applications of antidotes. Among these, there are four antidotes to laziness: effort 1, aspiration 2, the cause of faith 3, and the pliancy 4 brought about by its result. For forgetfulness, one must not forget the instructions 5, and observe whether sinking and agitation have arisen 6, and if they have arisen
