Because of the kindness of bestowing everything, now I too, in return for the kindness, will save them from suffering and place them in happiness. Suffering brings temporary or ultimate harm, and arising (samudaya) does not give happiness, so thinking of separating the two, like shaving off the suffering and arising (samudaya) of all sentient beings with a razor, absorb them all and place them in the center of your heart. Transform your body into a wish-fulfilling jewel and give it to all sentient beings, so that all needs and desires arise from it, so that all sentient beings temporarily lack nothing of the conditions for Dharma, and ultimately place them on the ground of Buddhahood. This meditation is the single practice of "Giving and Taking." If certainty arises from this and becomes stable, then combine the two with the breath. Practice giving when breathing out and taking when breathing in, so that it is impossible for a samadhi based on the breath not to arise. Therefore, training the mind and mastering the subtle winds will be accomplished at the same time. By meditating in this way, giving is love, taking is compassion, wanting to be free from temporary and ultimate suffering and to be happy is joy, having no near or far is equanimity, and placing beings on the ground of Buddhahood is bodhicitta. Therefore, this is the teaching of Serlingpa on training the mind in relative bodhicitta. When meditating on these, if it arises only when meditating and does not arise when not meditating, it is ordinary; if it arises whether meditating or not, it is great. The object is the realm, the aspect is the thought, and merit is its maturation. Reversing these three, one abides in the immeasurable. Thus, the main practice of training the mind, determining whether it is right or wrong and whether it has arisen or not, is done through subsequent awareness. Therefore, the subsequent teaching is: three objects, three poisons, three roots of virtue, which is a brief summary of the subsequent instructions. Observe how the three poisons arise in your own mindstream based on the three objects, and the reasons for this. Then, absorb the desire and so on of sentient beings, transform your body into a jewel, and give it to sentient beings, thereby causing sentient beings to have the root of virtue free from desire, and ultimately place them on the ground of Buddhahood. The three poisons can also be applied to all afflictions such as pride and jealousy. Apply whatever is present at the moment to the meditation.

Take from sentient beings the immediate suffering and the causes of suffering. Transform my body into a precious jewel and give these to them, immediately becoming the conditions for Dharma and ultimately attaining perfect Buddhahood. Give whatever appears to me as happiness to sentient beings, and think that immediate and ultimate benefits are accomplished. Purify all conduct with words. Like a completely pure sutra, even in words alone, think that all the sins and sufferings of sentient beings ripen upon me. May all my happiness and well-being ripen upon sentient beings. At the beginning and end, do two unions. First, in order to begin what is undertaken or to make it meaningful beforehand, generate the armor of thinking, 'I will meditate on the exchange of taking and giving, the mind of enlightenment.' When sleeping or afterwards, look in the morning, and if it is accomplished, generate joy and the joy of rejoicing. If it is not accomplished, confess and admit wrongdoing. Place all blame on one. Meditate that all discomfort or suffering from beginningless time until now has arisen from self-grasping, so if harming this is harmful, then harm it in any way. Meditate on being very grateful to all. All temporary and ultimate benefits and happiness arise dependent on sentient beings, whether it is temporary food and clothing or the ultimate path to perfect enlightenment, the mind of enlightenment, and the practice of the six perfections, all of these can be perfected dependent on sentient beings, and without sentient beings, they cannot be perfected, so meditate on gratitude and practice taking and giving. Always train in the three applications. Especially apply taking and giving to parents, khenpos, acharyas, virtuous spiritual friends, and others who are worthy of receiving kindness, and those who have great sins in their minds, and those who out of compassion bestow benefits but then cause harm in return, because it is easy to lose one's own Dharma by relying on these three. Hold the chief of the two powers. For one's own Dharma, not being ashamed by noble people is the witness of the person. And looking in accordance with whether one feels ashamed or not ashamed, regret or not regret, is the witness of self-awareness. Take everything from these two standards. If you realize that you do not need suffering and the causes of suffering, then also realize that all kind sentient beings do not need them either, and take these two sufferings of sentient beings upon yourself. Transform my body into a precious jewel and immediately give it to sentient beings.
