Regarding practice, one should have an aspiration that never diminishes. Since the root of all qualities comes from pure ethics, one should train in the vows one has taken without violating them. Do not speak of faults in the branches. Even if you have kept them purely, do not speak of others' faults because they are not perfect, because this is a branch of your own pure keeping. Therefore, no matter what others do, do not speak of their faults. Do not think of anything else. Whether good or bad, right or wrong, happiness or suffering occurs, rely on it as a reason to train the mind. Therefore, do not separate what should be abandoned from the antidote; rely on everything and practice giving and taking. Do not alternate. Do not just try it out, as the mind will not be tamed that way. Always train the mind in giving and taking bodhichitta as if driving a stake into the heart. Do not do it just for a moment. Complete and perfect enlightenment must be achieved through three countless eons, so cultivating bodhichitta cannot be completed in a moment, a word, or an eon. Practice for a long time. Train thoroughly. Giving away one's own body and taking on all the suffering of others cannot be done just by trying to see if one can do it. Train thoroughly as if cutting off a small root or cutting off a heavy burden. Be liberated by both thought and analysis. Furthermore, if you think that giving and taking have arisen in your mind and that you have a stable understanding, then when you encounter a place where afflictions arise, or when you encounter a suffering sentient being, or when you experience happiness or suffering yourself, clearly distinguish whether you can give, whether you can take, and whether it has become an antidote to afflictions.

Transform self-grasping into pure altruism. Abandon the reversed compassion represented by contemptuous or condescending pity, and cultivate unbearable compassion with love. Abandon the reversed patience of enduring suffering for the sake of fulfilling selfish desires, and practice the patience of achieving enlightenment for the benefit of others. Abandon the reversed diligence of inferior effort made to pursue pleasure or effort made for self-interest, and initiate the diligence of achieving Buddhahood for the benefit of others. Abandon the reversed joy of happiness arising from fulfilling selfish desires, and cultivate the joy arising from the accomplishment of others' benefit. Abandon the reversed rejoicing of gloating over the misfortune of sentient beings, and cultivate rejoicing over the happiness and well-being of sentient beings. Do not strike at the vital point. If you are a person with power, do not torment or strike humans or non-humans. Do not degrade deities into demons. Cultivating the mind of exchanging self and others, which is the nature of bodhicitta, is a quality. If you become arrogant about it, do not let it become the basis of faults. Identify the main cause. The main cause for sentient beings to attain the state of perfect Buddhahood is the practice of exchanging self and others, or the cultivation of bodhicitta, not the superficial actions of body and speech. Therefore, try to avoid the distractions of body and speech. At all times, focus on the mind of exchanging self and others, bodhicitta, without distraction. Do not reverse the order. Giving your body to others is not just a matter of words; give it sincerely. Taking on the sins and sufferings of others is not just a matter of words; accept them sincerely, and visualize yourself being broken, emaciated, or destroyed as a result. To summarize these and practice them, apply the five powers. Continuously remembering and practicing exchanging self and others is the power of aspiration. To generate the mind of exchanging self and others, bodhicitta, in your mind, make offerings, service, tormas, etc. This is the power of accumulating the white seeds of virtuous roots. To generate the mind of exchanging self and others, bodhicitta, in your mind, pray to the Lamas, the Three Jewels, etc. Continuously make your own aspirations. This is the power of aspiration. By constantly familiarizing yourself with the practice of exchanging self and others, bodhicitta, you will experience and gain freedom. This is the power of habituation. If you think that you cannot practice such exchanging self and others, it is because of your attachment to self.
