Now, no matter how many paths there are, such as the six perfections and the generation and completion stages of vows, they will fall into the Lesser Vehicle. Because loving-kindness, compassion, and the mind of enlightenment are needed, loving-kindness is to benefit, while compassion is to cultivate by directing it from the harm-doer. In a secluded place, keep the body's posture balanced, take refuge, and generate the mind of enlightenment. Consider yourself as the yidam deity, and visualize the lama on your crown. Visualize one like an enemy who causes great harm to yourself and others in front of you, and alternately cultivate the continuity of compassion and the reasoning for it. First, straighten the body, focus the mind one-pointedly, focus on the harm-doer, and verbally recite "This one who harms me, how pitiful!" Count one hundred, fifty, or twenty-one times, which is to cultivate continuously. Second, the reasoning is: this harm-doer is not the mother from previous lives, so think, "This mother, how pitiful!" and repeatedly recite. Why is it that compassion is never done just once or twice? Because it is done many times, so think, "How pitiful!" and repeatedly recite. Why compassion? Because the mother has given immeasurable benefits in the past, so think, "How pitiful!" and repeatedly recite. Why compassion? Generally, the mother is a benefactor, but why is she causing harm now? Because this harm-doer, even if she is the mother, has not gained autonomy of knowledge, so she is like a mad person. Generally, causing harm to sentient beings, especially to one's own child, think, "How pitiful!" and repeatedly recite. Why compassion? Because the cause of causing harm in this way will lead to birth in hells and other places, and being tormented by intense suffering, so think, "This mother who causes harm, how pitiful!" and repeatedly recite. In this way, by alternately thinking about the five aspects of focusing, reciting, and contemplating the cause of generating compassion, if tears come from the eyes, or the body gets goosebumps, or the body and mind cannot be controlled, etc., these signs indicate that compassion has arisen as it is, and then think, "For the sake of all sentient beings, led by this harm-doer, I shall attain Buddhahood," and visualize that the harm-doer and all sentient beings have attained the state of the yidam deity, and abide in non-elaborate wisdom for a long time. If discursive thoughts arise, dedicate the merit. In this way, after generating it as it is for one, also think in this way for the intermediate and small harm-doers. Then, towards close

Related to... the human-inhabited Jambudvipa. By contemplating the four continents and the three thousand worlds pervading the sky, immeasurable compassion will arise. By contemplating in this way, one's own anger, rage, etc., will be pacified. Leprosy, demons, etc., enemies and obstacles will be pacified, and all sentient beings will be cherished like an only child. Extraordinary non-conceptual wisdom will arise. Secondly, the yoga of the root cause is: When the mind is disturbed due to uncontrollable external and internal distractions, one should remember this Bodhicitta of exchanging oneself with others. By this, the hosts of demons and afflictions are destroyed, and non-conceptual wisdom arises. As it is said, the cause for attaining omniscience is Bodhicitta, which has two aspects: conventional and ultimate Bodhicitta. The ultimate is non-conceptual wisdom. Although there are many aspects of the first, here, the practice of exchanging oneself with others, as taught by the Lama, is that when the body is afflicted with severe illness and the mind with sorrow, both suffering; and when enemies, demons, external elemental disturbances, strong afflictions, etc., arise, in order to transform this into the path, if strong anger arises, one should contemplate that may my anger cause the anger of all angry sentient beings, along with its causes and effects, to ripen upon me. Furthermore, may all the afflictions and suffering, the fruits of all sentient beings' streams of being, which are generated by the root of self-grasping, ripen upon me. In particular, the torments of hell, the hunger and thirst of pretas, the killing and exploitation of animals, the strife of asuras, the suffering of the gods' downfall, the birth, old age, sickness, and death of humans, the diseases of the sick, the poverty of the poor, the suffering of the disabled—may all of these ripen upon me. From leisure and endowment onwards, may all obstacles to the ground and path, and all unfavorable conditions, ripen upon my anger. Thus, with body, speech, and mind focused, one-pointedly gather and take upon oneself all the suffering of sentient beings. In this way, meditate one-pointedly for one, two, or three hours, etc. Contemplate until the afflictions or conceptual thoughts are pacified. Transform the pain of illness into the path until it subsides. May the suffering of all sentient beings ripen upon me.
