One should regard oneself as an enemy. So where is that enemy? It is in my heart. Shantideva said: Thus, for a long time, it has been a continuous enemy, the sole cause of increasing harm. It is definitely dwelling in my heart. How can I have happiness in samsara? Thus he said. Although this dwells on the head, it does not grant victory to the eye. Thinking this is very inappropriate. Thus, the object or place of that self-grasping, which has faults, is this body where it is born. From beginningless time, grasping at self where there is no self, grasping at self where there is no self, it is the source of all suffering and faults. Cherishing and protecting this corpse, this dark body, these ears and clots of blood, this bag of pus, is like being naked and carrying a bundle of thorns. Loosening it brings happiness, but if you tighten it thinking it will benefit you, it only increases suffering. Shantideva also said: All the sufferings in the world come from the desire for one's own happiness; all the happiness in the world comes from the desire for the happiness of others. No need to say much, what need is there to elaborate? Look at the difference between a child acting for his own benefit and a Buddha acting for the benefit of others. Thus he said. Therefore, among all the afflictions that harm me from beginningless time, the greatest is self-grasping. From the virtuous friend above to the louse below, the sinful, the jealous, who accumulate sin, are all here. The one who does not allow me to be liberated from samsara, who binds me, who summons all the harmers, human and non-human, the owl-headed one who brings destruction, is the one who grasps at self and "I," the one who only accomplishes his own benefit. Thinking thus, one should recognize the enemy as the enemy. Shantideva said: This one has harmed me in samsara for hundreds of thousands of lifetimes. Now I must remember all the grudges and destroy your self-serving mind. Thus he said. If you still do not feel weary, unlike before, this time I have relied on a lama and studied the Sutras, and now I know you are the enemy. Where did you destroy me? That time in the past is gone, I

Did you see, where are you going now? To destroy all your arrogance. Just like that. Like this, take the thought as an enemy, and if selfish thoughts arise, pretend to have a relationship, hit each pig's nose once, and then let go, so it is said. Then, all the Mahayana Dharma, what is to be expressed is to completely let go of self-grasping. Tightly grasp sentient beings, there is nothing other than what harm is there to grasping at self, and what benefit is there to sentient beings, so it is said. Furthermore, all the Sutras and Shastras are spoken for the purpose of subduing afflictions, so what is to be subdued is afflictions. Generally speaking, there are eighty-four thousand kinds of afflictions. If you summarize them all, there are two hundred and twelve kinds. If you summarize them further, there are six roots and twenty secondary afflictions. If you summarize them further, there are five poisons and three poisons. If you summarize them again, only self-grasping remains, so if you can greatly subdue it, you will be very happy. Subduing to a medium degree will bring medium happiness. Subduing to a small degree will bring small happiness. If you don't subdue at all, there will be no happiness. The root of suffering is self-grasping. All faults and errors depend on this. Now, you must let go of attachment to your own body and mind, and treat them as enemies. Among them, the most important thing is to let go of attachment to the body. Shantideva said: Because of attachment to oneself, even small fears will arise. Who would not hate this body that gives rise to fear as an enemy? So it is said. From beginningless time, no matter what efforts have been made for this body, the nature of the body itself is an inanimate object, and it does not feel happy or sad when beneficial or harmful things are done to it. Sentient beings are empty of inherent existence, and the conventional phenomena that appear now arise from causes and conditions, so there is no self-nature, and cause and effect cease and arise in an instant, and are not established after arising. Therefore, thinking that meaningless opposition has been done before, take yourself as an enemy, and block all the eight classes of gods and demons and the eighty thousand kinds of obstacles at the door. May you be my friend, please destroy my self-grasping. Please turn my five aggregates into emptiness without inherent existence. Pray like this. By doing so, in this short life, do your best to subdue this demon of self-grasping, so it is said. Shavapa said: As long as you don't see yourself as an enemy
