When the three poisons of attachment, hatred, and delusion arise, train the mind in this way: "Just as I am now engaging in attachment, there are countless beings in the world who are dominated by attachment. How pitiful!" Thinking this, gather them all together in your mind and take them into your heart, wishing that all those beings may be endowed with the root of virtue free from attachment. Similarly, apply this to the five poisons and practice. "Train with words in all activities." This means training the mind with mere words. "May the suffering of all beings ripen upon me. May all beings attain happiness through my virtue!" This is a statement from the scriptures, or you can think, "May the suffering of all beings, together with its causes, ripen upon me, and may I be destroyed by suffering! May my virtue ripen upon all beings, and may all beings be endowed with happiness!" In this way, recite it aloud when no one is around. The thought that arises from the depths of your bones is, "Alas! My old mothers, my lords, these beings are so pitiful!" Thus, engaging in words in the four activities is the practice of what is taught in the sutras as "meditating on loving-kindness with mere words." Third, taking adverse conditions as helpers: When the environment and beings are seething with sin, Transform adverse conditions into the path to enlightenment. This means that whatever harm befalls beings and the elements, all of it is the result of having committed sins in one's previous lives. For those who have no connection to the Dharma, adverse conditions become obstacles, but for those who have entered the Dharma, it is as Khyenngawa said to Shawogangpa: if you have the wisdom to transform all physical illnesses and mental suffering into the path, then the blessings of the guru and deities are the means of bestowing accomplishments. Therefore, all adverse conditions should be transformed into helpers for training the mind in bodhicitta. There are two aspects to this: special intention—training the mind in bodhicitta, and special application—striving in the two accumulations and purification. Among these, first, it is taught how to transform adverse conditions into the path to enlightenment by relying on relative bodhicitta. How to transform them into the path? From beginningless time, because there has been no distinction between enemies and friends,

Without discerning what to accept and reject, all practices become the dharma of self-grasping, which is a mistake. Liberation and omniscience have not been approached at all before, so now we should take the division of enemy and ally as the path of practice. Here, the enemy is oneself, and the ally is sentient beings. There is nothing more than seeing oneself as an enemy and abandoning oneself, and seeing others as allies and cherishing them. The reason why oneself is the enemy is: All blame is placed on one. This shows that one should regard oneself as an enemy. No matter what unpleasant things happen to oneself, one blames others, thinking that one is taking it because one is holding on to oneself. Therefore, one should place all blame within oneself. As it is said: Whatever harm there is in the world, and whatever fears and sufferings there are, all of them come from clinging to self. What can that great demon do to me? And: If there is self, then one knows others. From the division of self and others come attachment and hatred. From the connection between these two, all faults arise. And: Knowing that oneself has faults and that others are like an ocean of virtues, one should completely abandon self-grasping and take others as the object of meditation. It is said that all faults and evils in the world arise from clinging to self. From beginningless time, one has grasped at what is not self as self. In this body, wherever it is born, one has grasped at what is not self as self, and by holding on to and protecting it, one makes choices based on what one likes and dislikes. By deceiving, tricking, and cheating others, one accumulates afflictions and bad karma. From beginningless time, in general, in endless samsara, in particular, it causes one to take on immeasurable suffering in the three lower realms. As it is said: Though countless eons have passed, with such great effort, you have only accomplished your own suffering. Therefore, if one still does not regard it as an enemy, it will only create unhappiness, accumulate bad karma, and cause one to stay and wander in endless samsara, suffering more intensely and for a longer time than before. Therefore, all the sufferings of the three times are created by cherishing self-grasping. Thus, this has been the executioner who kills me since beginningless time. Therefore, one should think that since beginningless samsara, all deaths have not been caused by others, but by oneself. Thinking in this way, there is no contradiction, and one should practice Sodam.
