If Dharma remains merely as words and is not put into practice, it is no different from a parrot singing. Learn the Dharma, understand one or two aspects, and then put it into practice. Understand a bit, understand a little more, and then apply it to your own mind and body. If the Dharma does not come into your own being, if the mind and Dharma do not mix like water and flour, then there is not even room for a hair between the Dharma and the person. If the Dharma is just said casually, like a piece of lung, then it cannot fulfill the meaning of the Dharma. There are many who are vague and pretend without listening to the teachings, and thus the purpose of the Dharma is not achieved. The Venerable said, "I have dedicated my life to practice." Gyalsé Rinpoche (Gyalsé Thokmé Zangpo Pal), Lama Pang Lodrö Tenpa, Arhat Sönam Drakpa, Butön, and many other lamas, all possessed scholarship, discipline, and goodness. They generated the mind of Bodhicitta, and their activities for taming beings were vast. They could see the face of their Yidam. Until the age of seventy-something, they upheld the Dharma at Dunchu Chözong. There were also many great disciples such as Gya Jampal Manjushri. The Great Accomplished One also said: For those who are on the path to liberation through the sacred Dharma, if they single-mindedly pursue the prosperity of this life, there is no greater obstacle than this. Therefore, in all circumstances, abandon it. Whatever virtuous deeds of listening, contemplation, and meditation you do, if it is mixed with evil thoughts, it is like a hundred delicious foods mixed with vomit, which will turn the good into bad; this is truly the work of a demon. Teachers, students, dharma friends, and relatives quarrel endlessly, and they do not avoid sin, suffering, and evil words. They work hard to pursue enjoyment, all of which is driven by evil thoughts. In order to destroy the wealth of others, they fight and quarrel with great effort of body and mind, causing loss to themselves and others in this life and the next, because the demon of evil thoughts has entered their hearts. Even holding the lamp of scriptures in their hands, they fight for fame, gain, and retinues, falling into the abyss of sin, abandoning the eye of correction, all of which is obscured by the fog of evil thoughts. Even if they give away a lot of wealth, it is for the sake of fame and retinues, so even great generosity will turn into small and bad results, which is certainly destroyed by the ogress of evil thoughts. Even if they strive to keep the precepts, it is for the sake of fame and gain, etc.

Bound by bonds, one cannot tread the path of liberation, The iron shackles that bind one to the prison of samsara Certainly reside in the hands of evil thoughts. Though meditating for a long time, due to attachment and hatred, Praising oneself and denigrating others, engaging in strife, Having cultivated a mind that is not pacified by meditating on quiescence, It is taken up because the roots of evil thoughts are like a ditch. Diseases, evil spirits, thieves, enemies, etc., are said to be Obstacles to the sacred Dharma, but if one's own mind Is workable, then all of them become friends. Evil thoughts are certainly an obstacle to the sacred Dharma. Accomplishing the prosperity of this life is difficult to achieve. Even if accomplished, there is no certainty of enjoying it freely. What will certainly come to me is death. At that time, wealth and retinue will not help. Separation from them will especially increase suffering. Having thought thus, abandon the means for greatness in this life. Thus it is said. This Dharma of abandoning this life is even more profound than profound. The term "profound" means that which is difficult for the mind to fathom, difficult to realize, a crucial method for eliminating suffering and accomplishing happiness, something that others do not have. This is called profound. And this Dharma of abandoning this life is difficult to fathom and difficult to realize. In India itself, from the materialists to the Chittamatrins, in front of whomever, if one says that all phenomena are not truly existent, that they are emptiness, then it seems that people will think, "This kind of babbler is crazy." Similarly, for those who are attached to this life, such as Geshes who hold the Kadam texts, Lamas who are prostrated to by hundreds of thousands of people, who recite tantras, open the faces of hundreds of mandalas, spend their time in retreats and gatherings, meditating on deities and channels and winds, or who practice Mahamudra, Pacification, and Dzogchen, who are famous like thunder, if they do not recognize this Dharma with their own eyes, and if they have to abandon all the prosperity and happiness of this life, then they will think, "This kind of babbler," and it will not fit in their minds. They will feel fear and dread towards this Dharma, and they will hide it. Even if they see others abandoning the prosperity of this life, they will think that they are stupid and that they are going to wander around like beggars, not listening to the advice of relatives and friends, and they will regard them as foolish and useless. Whatever they do, such as hearing, thinking, and meditating, is all so that suffering and the like will not come in this life.
