The ground should be meditated upon. It is said. Dharma Lord said: This life will die without any leisure, just like livestock being led to the slaughterhouse, each moment is approaching death. Be sure to remember death, Rinchen Zhuba. The thought of doing today and doing tomorrow has not been completed, do not think hundreds of thoughts, include them under one thought. The terrifying and frightening Lord of Death comes to greet you, when the breath stops on the bed and life ends, nothing but the Dharma will help, Rinchen Zhuba. So he said. Lama Rinpoche said: If a strong belief in the impermanence of death has not arisen, then one will be carried away by meaningless achievements, beauty, and fame, and all the virtues of hearing, thinking, and meditating will become like virtues, and will not benefit the next life at all. Sleepiness, idle talk, and food and drink also go by as if they cannot be avoided, and one is lost under their control. If a strong belief in impermanence arises, then one will not only not regret it at the time of death, but will also feel joy in death, so it is important to remember death. Potowa said: The teachers want a Dharma that teaches, the old people want a Dharma that is old. Like a mother sheep being replaced (just as a mother sheep is replaced, the abandonment between monks and disciples is called a mother sheep being replaced). They want a Dharma that replaces the mother sheep, but for me there is nothing other than impermanence. They despise impermanence, seeing it as just the Dharma of children and women, and if they despise this Dharma, they will not be able to truly practice it. In the past, someone asked whether the Tibetan teachers could dispel appearances, and whether the Buddha had wisdom. Potowa said: Appearances and consciousness are impermanent, and all appearances in this life are dispelled by this. In the north, someone offered food to a sick person, and when one person took the food, he was ridiculed. He said: Even if it is bad, try to get the food of Northern Serka. Similarly, when practicing impermanence, one always feels unhappy. If this Dharma can arise in the mind, that is enough. Someone asked Potowa how to expand his view, and he said: There is nothing to expand, just practice this. There is nothing deeper than this. He also said: If your capacity is better than mine, it is useless to stay here. If you are the same as me, then to me

Great manifestation and elimination have been beneficial, and it is said that it will also be beneficial to you. A yogi's daughter said, "Shéda, my mirror is too small." The father said, "Look at this first, and if it is small now, go to my castle and beat the drum." Similarly, to those who say that impermanence is a small Dharma, first let this arise in your mindstream, and then you can determine others. Potowa said, "If you forget impermanence, all Dharmas are like building a castle on ice. In calm times, emptiness and so on seem to work, but when an emergency arises, it collapses from the root. If this arises, practice will not regress. If this does not arise, everything will regress. If this arises, bodhicitta and emptiness, etc., will all come like a pile." Shawopa also said, "Here, my experience of meditating on impermanence has gone deep into the depths of the Dharma. The experience of meditating on emptiness is just lip service." His little disciple said, "Turning around without understanding impermanence is just in vain." What he said is true. Gönpawa said, "Impermanence and karma, the listener is not worth listening to, and the speaker is not worth speaking. The one who is skilled at making it a fisherman's Dharma is not a true wise man, and the monk and the good person are not true monks and good people." Zhangzun Yerpa said, "If impermanence does not arise in the morning, this life will end at noon. If it arises at noon, it will end in the evening. If this life ends, whatever is done will not become Dharma." Jampel Rinpoche said, "If you don't meditate on a session of impermanence this morning, it seems that this day this life will be wasted." When Dromtön Rinpoche asked Lodrö Yeshe Jung for a key instruction, a Jowo was displeased with grasping at worldly dharmas and said, "Jowopa's practice must be done in an emergency, and if there is no emergency, then the faith in calmness is like a parrot's recitation. The arrival of an emergency lies in thinking about death and karma many times. Therefore, suffering arises from non-virtue. How can one be certain of liberation from this? Day and night I must think about this alone." It is said that he said this. Jampel asked Potowa, "Potowa said, 'Oh, Geshe has a secret instruction that no one else has.' Is that what he was talking about?'"
