There is no offering that pleases the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas more than making the practice of abandoning this life the essence. Regarding this, the current teachings and discussions seem to be for the sake of others. Methods of gathering followers such as empowerments, transmissions, and guidance, which are focused on gaining fame and wealth, seem to be for the sake of others, but in reality, they are meaningless. Therefore, no matter how you think about it, it is meaningless, and it is most important to abandon everything possible without being attached to this short life. Sixteenth, practicing the special causes of abandoning this life: Although abandoning this life is necessary, if you do not practice the main cause of abandoning this life, you will not be able to abandon this life, so you must understand the main practice. What is that? It is to think well about death and impermanence. Je Rinpoche said: "The fault of not meditating on death is that although everyone thinks that they will eventually die, they think every day that they will not die today, and they will not die today, and their minds are always biased towards the side of not dying, even until death. If you do not counteract this thought, you will be blinded by this thought, and the thought of wanting to stay in this life will arise, thinking that this and that are necessary, only pursuing the happiness of this life, and thinking only of ways to eliminate suffering. Therefore, the thought of striving for great goals such as the next life, liberation, and omniscience will not arise, and they will not enter the Dharma. Even if they reluctantly listen, think, and practice, etc., it is only for the sake of this life, and the good deeds they do are weak, and they are easily associated with evil deeds and sins, and it is rare not to be mixed with the cause of evil paths. Even if you practice for the sake of the next life, you will not be able to prevent procrastination and laziness, as well as distractions such as sleep, drowsiness, idle talk, and eating and drinking, so you will not be able to practice properly with great diligence. Not only will you not be able to practice properly, but because you are overly pursuing the perfection of this life, afflictions and the evil deeds caused by afflictions will increase, turning your back on the nectar of the Dharma, and eventually being led to evil paths, there is nothing worse than that. The Four Hundred Verses says: Whoever has dominion over the three realms.

One's own self is not the maker of death. If it is in the hands of peace and sleep, what else is more evil than that? Thus it is said. From the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: Having to go, abandoning everything, I did not know it like that. For the sake of friends and non-friends, I committed various sins. Thus it is said. The benefit of meditating on mindfulness of death is: If a genuine mind of meditating on mindfulness of death arises, for example, if it is decided that one will die today or tomorrow, then when one has a little understanding of the Dharma, seeing that there is no association with relatives and so on, the attachment to them will cease. And just as the desire to take the essence naturally arises from the gate of generosity and so on, seeing that all efforts for the sake of worldly things such as gain and respect are meaningless, one turns away from misconduct. And by accumulating good deeds such as taking refuge and keeping the precepts, one elevates oneself to a noble position and leads sentient beings there as well. What could be more important than that? Therefore, it is praised with many examples, such as in the Great Nirvana Sutra: Among those who plow the fields, the autumn harvest is the best. Among all the footprints, the footprint of the ox is the best. Among all perceptions, the perception of impermanence and death is the best, because these eliminate the desire of the three realms, as well as ignorance and all pride. Thus it is said. Similarly, it is praised as the attainment that destroys all defilements at once, and as the gate that accomplishes all goodness at once. In short, the time to accomplish the purpose of a person is only this time when a special basis is obtained. However, most of us stay in the lower realms, and even if we occasionally come to the higher realms, we are mostly in a state of no leisure, so we do not find the opportunity to practice the Dharma there. Even when we find a basis that is sufficient for practice, we do not practice the Dharma properly because we are attached to the thought that we are not going to die yet. Therefore, holding on to the side of not dying with the mind is the gate of all decline, and mindfulness of death is the gate of all perfection. Therefore, do not think that this is the practice of those who have no other profound Dharma to meditate on, and do not hold that although it is to be meditated on, one should only meditate on it a little at first and not practice it in constant practice. Rather, one should have a heartfelt conviction of its necessity in the beginning, middle, and end.
