That which suppresses afflictions and increases virtue. Actions and many migrations are for the sake of virtue. Therefore, whether to go or stay, one should examine whether virtue will increase or not. As Potowa said: "A place and friend that are in harmony, the three trainings measured by bodhicitta, wherever dwelling increases them, that is the place; whoever associating with increases them, that is the friend. The opposite of that is not a place or friend." Also, like the fire waging war against the thorn tree and failing because it did not suit the grass and trees. The grass and trees gathered an army, and the fire said, 'They are gathering an army.' The bigger their army, the more they are my friends.' Similarly, no matter what suffering and harm arises, if it does not harm the Dharma, but rather helps the Dharma, then there is no need to abandon that place. Second, abandoning relatives: Even if living in a good place, it is important to sever ties with relatives. Tsangpa Gyare said: "If you are disgusted with worldly affairs, that is a sign of severing ties. If you are mindful of worldly affairs, sinking into the mire of attachment and aversion, that is a sign of severing ties. If you understand all worldly actions as illusory, that is a sign of abandoning clinging. If you regard everything as real, that is a sign of severing ties. If you are mindful of worldly affairs, that is a sign of sinking into the mire of attachment and aversion. If you understand all worldly actions as illusory, that is a sign of abandoning clinging. If you regard everything as real, that is a sign of being lazy in practice." He said. Abandoning relatives does not mean abandoning sentient beings from the heart, but rather generating compassion and severing ties of body and possessions. If you do not do this, you cannot accomplish the Dharma. When severing ties, it is best if you can obtain the consent of your parents and others. Even if you are scolded, disappointed, complained about, etc., you should not be discouraged. In the past, starting from the Bhagavan, all those who practiced the Dharma abandoned their relatives like discarding tears from their eyes, which seems to be the greatness of dependent arising. Gyalse Rinpoche said: "Relatives and others, with loving hearts, urge you to accumulate the perfections of this life, foolish people who want to help but cause harm, they only seek the benefit of this life. In order to attain liberation, you must abandon this life and strive to practice the profound path."

Therefore, for the sake of those, completely abandon those, and it is extremely important to diligently practice in solitude. When wealthy, even if you flee, they will pursue; when declining, even if you approach, they will flee. If a son himself kills his own father, who can be trusted among relatives? When apparent, they show a joyful demeanor; when hidden, they spread various unpleasant words. They repay kindness with harm, and even close child-like friends will surely deceive. When wealthy, they gather with various flattering smiles, using means to seize my wealth; when declining, they scowl and quarrel, offering no help whatsoever, and supporting useless relatives is merely foolish. When relatives are numerous and flourishing, they gather like birds on a tree; once scattered, greed and hatred arise within. Once danger arises, fathers and sons will kill each other. It is very rare for relatives to bring benefit and happiness. Said. Kharakpa said: This life's parents, children, and all relatives at the root, are like guests meeting at an inn, regard them as unrelated! Said. Rigpai Wangchuk said: Desired pleasures are like the essence of an enemy, relatives are like binding ropes, craving greatness is like a demon entering a house, don't be too self-important, be like a merchant. Said. The noble one (སྐྱེས་མཆོག་པ།, *skyes mchog pa*) named Samten Pal (བསམ་གཏན་དཔལ།, *bsam gtan dpal*), the Pacifier was a disciple of Gyarak Chöje (རྒྱ་གྲགས་ཆོས་རྗེ།), mainly relying on the Pacifier. He closed the doors and windows and was said to have attained Samadhi. He said: From the homeland arises attachment and aversion, if you are a person weary of the world, go to a desolate place! From relatives arises sorrow, if you are a practitioner, be humble! From wealth arises accumulation, if you are a greedy person, control your mind! From delicious food arises desire, if you are a renunciate, practice asceticism! This insatiable relative, the more you support them, the more they need to be cared for. It is best to sever the ties of sorrow. This is a heartfelt message, keep it in mind! Said. Baharawa said: Relatives, near and far, are the same, when wealthy they look at your face and gestures, when poor and destitute they see you as dirt, those without support are not seen, but they cling to high branches. In bad times it is difficult to abandon relatives. Said. Next is the third, abandoning servants and retinue. Similarly, regarding servants, retinue, and disciples, etc.
