From training in constancy to incorporating aspiration and bodhicitta into practice, even if quiescence and insight haven't arisen, just plant the seeds. Dying while planting aspirations is as meaningful as attaining the state of Mahamudra. The difference between great and small merit isn't about the amount of wealth, but whether one knows that one's own mindstream hasn't been inverted. The difference lies between arising and not arising. It's said that having much of this life's prosperity doesn't make one virtuous; having arisen the wisdom of renunciation, etc., that hasn't been inverted makes one virtuous. In the Blue Annals, it says: Even for a prince, if the mindstream turns to Dharma, it's the ultimate accumulation of merit. If one remembers the certainty of death, it's the ultimate practice. If one abandons evil and does good, it's the ultimate accomplishment. If one carries all beings on one's shoulders, it's the ultimate nobility. If one is content and has few desires, it's the ultimate wealth. If one has no attachment to anything, it's the ultimate happiness. Having thought like that, aversion arises towards all the desires of this life. When that increases, if aversion arises towards all of samsara, then it can be said that one has grasped the path to liberation. Without that, no matter what one has, one cannot grasp the path. When that arises, one truly enters the ranks of Dharma practitioners. The benefits of abandoning this life and the faults of not abandoning it are like that. So, how should one abandon this life? To that, Tsangpa Gyare said: Abandoning this life requires these vows. Not associating with people, dwelling alone, abandoning one's homeland, only practicing aversion to desirable objects, abiding in low places, not protecting anyone's face, setting up defenses against afflictions, not deliberately clinging to others' words, letting them say or do whatever, not being distressed even if cherished things are carried away by the wind, spending one's life exhausting suffering like a beggar dying, constantly reciting meaningless fierce mantras, holding one's own reins, practicing good conduct like clouds pervading, these are the eleven vows. Furthermore, abandoning this life requires a person to have the perseverance and decisiveness like breaking a stone. For those who find it difficult to delve into immediate comfort, it's like the back of an old yak.

One needs a hermit. One needs someone who fears hustle and bustle like a shepherd attacked by a beast. One needs someone like a criminal who jumps off a cliff without considering the consequences. One needs someone who can endure suffering like a widow raising orphans. In general, regarding the desire to abandon desire, the noble Asanga said: There are two types of desires: material desires and afflictive desires. Both of these should be abandoned through renunciation. Material desires refer to land, fields, houses, as well as relatives such as parents, and all possessions such as wealth and grain. Renouncing these and going forth is what is meant by "going forth from home to homelessness." Now, the way to abandon life is something that all those who have renounced in the teachings of the Bhagavan do. As for how to do it, one knows by looking at oneself. However, for those of low intelligence nowadays, if it is not explained separately, they will not understand. If we explain it as Tsangpa Gyare used to say, there are nineteen precepts for abandoning life, the first of which is abandoning one's homeland, which is very important. Because there, there are relatives who give rise to attachment, wealth such as fields and houses, and enemies who give rise to hatred. If the mind is controlled by attachment and hatred, one cannot practice the Dharma. Even if one does not generate attachment and hatred, they will turn around and generate attachment and hatred towards you. Relatives will disrupt their Dharma practice in this life, and if they do not, they will accumulate sin. Enemies will remember past grudges and harm you through the three doors of body, speech, and mind. This will bring sin and suffering to oneself and others. If one abandons one's homeland, there is no such fault. As Potowa said: Abandon the place of birth, distance yourself from the world. Abandon all hustle and bustle, and apply your mind properly. Then liberation will not be far away. Abandoning the place of birth, cutting off ties with relatives, and abandoning all unexamined things, these three are the precepts of Ra Drengba, but all later people found this difficult to do. In the Sutra Encouraging Excellent Intention, it also says: Wherever there is contention or strife, it is best to go beyond a hundred yojanas to the other shore. Wherever there are afflictions, do not stay or dwell there even for a moment. Those who desire renunciation, who desire benefit, who desire merit, do not quarrel with a mind of hatred.
