Even if the tears shed from crying were accumulated, they would be more than the great ocean. In this way, because they avert harm and accomplish benefit, think well that these beings are extremely kind. Thinking how wonderful it would be if these beings had temporary and ultimate happiness, and with the loving-kindness of thinking, "I will make them happy." These beings, although they want happiness, are full of suffering: hells have the suffering of heat and cold, pretas have the suffering of hunger and thirst, animals have the suffering of eating each other, and so on, humans also have the suffering of birth, old age, sickness, and death, and so on, asuras have the suffering of fighting, and so on, and desire realm gods have the suffering of death omens, and so on, with unimaginable suffering. Even in the higher realms, they will fall from there and be born in hells, and so on, in short, they do not escape from suffering. The Sutra on the Establishment of Mindfulness says: "Sentient beings in hell are destroyed by hellfire, pretas are destroyed by hunger and thirst, animals are destroyed by eating each other, humans are destroyed by short lives, gods are destroyed by carelessness. In samsara, which is as small as the tip of a needle, there is never any happiness." Furthermore, the sutra says: "The desire realm is also full of faults, the form realm is also full of faults, and likewise, the formless realm is also full of many faults." The Vinaya-agama says: "Due to the power of craving, existence, and ignorance, beings are divided into three: humans, gods, and the three lower realms. They ignorantly wander in the five realms, like a potter's wheel turning. The three realms burn with the suffering of old age and disease. Here, the fire of death blazes fiercely, without a protector. Born from existence, beings are always ignorant, like a bee trapped in a jar, spinning around." As it is said, in short, no matter where one is born in the six realms of the three realms, they are always tormented by the suffering of suffering, the suffering of change, and the pervasive suffering of conditioning. Although these beings want to be liberated from that suffering, they are tightly bound by the bonds of karma and afflictions, not taken care of by a virtuous friend, separated from a good friend who leads to liberation, and have not become objects of taming for the noble ones, so there is no way to be liberated from suffering. Thinking this, generate great compassion, as if the suffering of all beings has fallen upon oneself. These beings

How wonderful it would be if all beings could be free from suffering and its causes! I must free them from suffering, and cultivate intense compassion. Although I long for and am willing to take on the responsibility of bringing happiness to these beings and liberating them from all suffering, I do not have the power to do so now. Not only do I not have this power, but even Brahma and Indra, and even Shravaka, Pratyekabuddha Arhats, etc., do not have it. So, who has this power? Only the perfectly enlightened Buddha, who perfectly possesses the two benefits, has this power, so I must attain Buddhahood. The arising of Bodhicitta is the main cause for attaining Buddhahood, so I must generate Bodhicitta. After thinking about this from the depths of my heart, generate Bodhicitta and study the precepts of Bodhicitta, I will surely attain Buddhahood. After attaining Buddhahood, I will liberate beings from the river of suffering, liberate them from the bonds of karma and afflictions, temporarily relieve their suffering, and ultimately guide them to liberation from Samsara. Think like this. Visualize that in the sky in front of you, Shakyamuni Buddha and countless Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are truly present, and pray with devotion. When praying, strongly generate the thought that their wisdom and compassion will surely see me. Kneel with your right knee on the ground, sit in a kneeling position, join your palms, remember the meaning, and recite these rituals three times with one mind to generate Bodhicitta. Please begin the first recitation. Please all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in the ten directions remember me. Please the Guru remember me. Recite your own name, I, so-and-so, the nature of generosity, the nature of morality, and the nature of meditation of the roots of virtue that I have done in life after life, as well as encouraging others to do good, and the roots of virtue of rejoicing in the good deeds of others. Just as the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Enlightened Buddhas of the past and the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who dwell on the earth generated the unsurpassed perfect Bodhicitta, so too, I, so-and-so, from now until Bo-
