Therefore, one should also train in consciously not telling lies. Furthermore, generating regret for things that should not be regretted is generally generating regret for engaging in virtuous deeds, and especially for engaging in the Great Vehicle. The remedy for this is to place some sentient beings in virtuous deeds and to place them in the state of unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, not in the state of hearers and solitary realizers. One should train in this meaning. As a remedy for speaking unpleasant words to a Bodhisattva who has generated the mind of enlightenment out of hatred, one should generate the perception of a teacher towards a Bodhisattva who has generated the mind of enlightenment and praise their qualities in the ten directions. As it is said in the Sutra Teaching the Absence of Arising of All Dharmas: "Three times during the day and likewise at night, I bow with my head to the Bodhisattvas. When they constantly engage in actions as they wish, do not seek even the slightest fault in them." One should act accordingly. As a remedy for dealing with all sentient beings with deceit and trickery, one should abide in pure superior intention towards all sentient beings, and one should train in not being deceitful and tricky. Superior intention is the wish to connect all sentient beings with benefit and happiness. Fourth, training in not abandoning sentient beings. Completely abandoning sentient beings means abandoning sentient beings because one sees their faults, or because the path of the Great Vehicle is difficult to practice, etc., with the intention of attaining Buddhahood for the sake of others. If this happens, whether one wishes to attain liberation or wishes to attain the liberation of hearers or solitary realizers, one abandons both the aspiration and the engagement. The Compendium Sutra says: "Even if one practices the ten paths of virtuous action for hundreds of millions of kalpas, if one desires to attain the state of a solitary conqueror, then a fault occurs in discipline, and discipline is destroyed. This generation of the mind is heavier than even the defeat of others." Therefore, one should train in not abandoning sentient beings. Temporary abandonment means abandoning in one's mind the thought that one should and could benefit certain sentient beings, but one does not. This also abandons the mind of enlightenment focused on sentient beings, so during the session, one should take back with compassion any sentient being that has been abandoned in one's mind, and even if one does not actually benefit them, one should ensure that one's mind is not harmed. Therefore, it is said: "Even if one does not have the power to benefit others, one should always have the intention to benefit them. Towards the object of thought, that

exists. That is, in terms of meaning, entering into it. Therefore, one should generate the intention to benefit all sentient beings. Fifth, one should remember the benefits of Bodhicitta. As stated in the Sutra of the Arrayed Tree: "The mind of enlightenment is like the seed of all the Buddhas' teachings." In short, all the Buddhas' teachings and all the qualities of the Buddhas, the benefits of Bodhicitta are also just as numerous. Why is that? Because all the mandalas of the Bodhisattvas' conduct arise from this, and all the Tathagatas who appear in the past, future, and present are also born from this. One should repeatedly remember such benefits. Furthermore, the scriptures say: "In particular, those who wish to quickly attain clairvoyance should study the Mahayana sutra called 'The Seven Dharmas Requested by the Noble Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva'." Therefore, the meaning of that sutra is: even with conceptual thought, one should not rely on desire, let alone the union of the two organs? Even in dreams, one should not rely on bad spiritual friends. Like a bird, the mind has no attachment. Even if one is skilled in both means and wisdom, one should have no pride. Abandoning attachment to things, one should rely on the liberation of emptiness. Acting with wisdom that is not truly real but like an illusion. Abiding with pure superior intention towards sentient beings. Not slandering cause and effect, these seven dharmas are taught, therefore one should practice them. Also, the four black dharmas, and after the downfall of abandoning sentient beings arises, if more than one-sixth of a day and night has passed, one should confess and vow due to abandoning the mind of enlightenment, and then take it up again. If an antidote arises within the period, then the time of confession is the same, whether early or late. The object of confession is a Bodhisattva, or if one cannot find one, in front of someone who is at least a layperson of individual liberation, one should say, "I have committed this downfall," and then confess. Thus it is said. This section on aspiration and the mind of enlightenment comes solely from the oral transmission of instructions passed down from Maitreya Buddha to Atisha. The mind training, rituals, and precepts here are not found in other scriptures, therefore, with this refuge
