When there is no focus at all and the power of mindfulness weakens, it is coarse dullness. Although there is clarity and lucidity, if the certainty of determining the object of focus is slightly weaker than being firm and tight, it is subtle dullness. As an antidote to these, one should contemplate the qualities of the Three Jewels, keep in mind the characteristics of appearances, and practice the instructions on blending wind-mind with space. If the mind is not stable and does not remain unwavering on the object of focus, but slightly wanders, it is subtle excitement. As an antidote to this, one should cultivate mindfulness and awareness and meditate. Even if one cultivates mindfulness and awareness, if it does not remain stable but wanders to objects of attachment, it is coarse excitement. As an antidote to this, one should meditate on impermanence, the three lower realms, and the suffering of samsara, and practice the instructions on forcibly cutting off excitement. When dullness and excitement both arise, it is a fault not to counteract them. Therefore, as an antidote to this, one should recognize dullness and excitement as soon as they arise and rely on the effort of abandoning them. Furthermore, if the mind is too focused on the object of focus, making awareness too intense, although there is clarity, the element of excitement is greater, making it difficult to find stability. If one does not focus so much, but remains loosely, although there is an element of stability, the element of dullness is greater, making it difficult to find clarity. Therefore, one should measure according to one's own experience. If one feels that raising the intensity of awareness to this extent will cause excitement to arise, one should relax it slightly. If one feels that remaining at this level will cause dullness to arise, one should slightly raise the intensity of awareness to achieve balance. In between these two, withdraw the mind from wandering excitement and seek stability. Once stability is achieved, alternately guard against dullness and bring forth clarity with intense awareness. By alternately cultivating these two, one will achieve flawless samadhi. Do not rely solely on clarity without lucidity, where the mode of holding onto certainty is intense. In this way, even subtle dullness and excitement are cut off. When the mind continuously enters samadhi, it is a fault to make effort. Therefore, as an antidote to this, do not make effort to counteract dullness and excitement, but relax and remain in a state of equanimity. By cultivating well in this way, one will gradually attain the nine stages of abiding of the mind, and thus achieve shamatha complete with physical and mental pliancy. Third, how to act at the end is the same as before. Second, during breaks between sessions, one should also practice the aspects of shamatha

As before, one should view the scriptures and commentaries of the established teachers. Secondly, there are two ways to train in the nature of wisdom, which is vipashyana: how to practice during a session, and how to practice in between sessions. The first has three parts: preliminary, main practice, and conclusion. The preliminary is similar to what was said in the context of shamatha, but especially, listening to the instructions on vipashyana from a qualified and wise spiritual friend, and supplicating with intense devotion, making no distinction between the lama and the yidam deity, and combining the effort of accumulating merit and purifying obscurations, are indispensable preliminaries for realizing the view. Secondly, the main practice has two parts: how to meditate after establishing the selflessness of persons, and how to meditate after establishing the selflessness of phenomena. The first is: although the scriptures of the Buddhas have taught countless ways of reasoning to establish selflessness, it is easier for beginners to establish it through four key points. The method is: even when we are in a deep sleep, the innate clinging to "I" is the subtle thought that naturally arises in the center of the heart. Furthermore, if one has not committed such a fault, but another falsely accuses you of having committed this and that fault, and when such a false accusation is made against me who has not committed such a fault, and a subtle thought naturally arises in the heart, the way in which the innate clinging to "I" grasps is clearly present. Therefore, at that time, one should examine with a subtle part of awareness where that thought grasps "I" and in what way it grasps. Moreover, if the subsequent thought is too strong, the previous thought will disappear, and nothing but emptiness will remain, so one should generate the thought "I am" as the main object, and then examine it with a subtle part of awareness. When examined in that way, the place where the innate clinging to "I" grasps is not something other than one's own five aggregates or body and mind, nor is it on each of the five aggregates or each of the body and mind, but on the vague state of the aggregation of the five aggregates or the aggregation of body and mind, which is established by conceptual thought.
