It is not merely superficial, but rather the belief that there is an inherently existent "I" from the very beginning. This is the way the co-emergent self-grasping clings to the "I," and the "I" that is the object of this clinging is what is to be negated. Therefore, one should not only understand what others say and general words, but also clearly recognize this way of being on one's own continuum. This is the first key point, which is the key to ascertaining the phenomenon to be negated. The second key point is to ascertain the pervasiveness: the "I" that is grasped by the mind that clings tightly to the core of one's heart, thinking "I am...", if this "I" exists on top of one's five aggregates, then is this "I" one with the five aggregates or separate from them? There is absolutely no third way of existing other than these two ways of existing. Whatever phenomena there are, they must exist either as one or as many. One must resolve that there is absolutely no third way of existing other than these two ways of existing. The third key point is to ascertain the separation from a truly existent oneness: if one thinks that the "I" that is grasped in this way is one with the five aggregates, then just as one person has five aggregates, there would also be five "I"s with different continuums. Or, just as the "I" is one, the five aggregates would also become an indivisible whole. Because there are many such faults, one should contemplate that the "I" that is grasped in this way is not one with the five aggregates. Furthermore, if the "I" that is grasped in this way were one with the five aggregates, then just as the five aggregates arise and cease, the inherently existent "I" that is grasped by the mind would also arise and cease. If that were the case, then are the previous and subsequent moments of this arising and ceasing "I" one or separate? If they are one, then the "I" of the past life, future life, and this life would become an indivisible whole. If they are separate, then in general, merely being separate does not necessarily mean being unrelatedly separate. However, if it is a separateness that is established by its own nature, then it must be a separateness that has absolutely no connection. Therefore, the "I" of the past life, future life, and this life would become a separateness with absolutely no connection. As a result, there would be many faults such as encountering results without having created the cause and wasting the causes that have been created. Therefore, the previous and subsequent moments of such an "I" are not separate. Therefore, one should contemplate that the "I" that is grasped by the mind is not one with the five aggregates.
