How to enter (meditation) is the same as before. Secondly, during breaks between sessions, one should also, as before, read the profound and vast scriptures and commentaries that explain the conduct of the sons of the Buddhas. Secondly, there are two ways to train in the last two perfections: how to train in calm abiding, which is the essence of meditation, and how to train in insight, which is the essence of wisdom. The first is further divided into two: how to practice during sessions, and how to practice during breaks between sessions. The first is further divided into three: preliminary, main practice, and conclusion. First, the preliminary: the general preliminary practices, and in particular, cultivating the minds of the lesser and intermediate persons, in a secluded place with favorable conditions such as good land and good friends, abiding in pure morality, abandoning excessive interaction with crowds and coarse thoughts of desire, abiding in contentment and knowing enough, sitting upright on a comfortable cushion, legs in the vajra posture, hands in the meditation mudra, regulating the breath, etc., first cultivating the causes and conditions for achieving calm abiding. During the main practice, although many objects of meditation for achieving calm abiding are mentioned, the main one is remembering the Buddha, because remembering the Buddha can become the most excellent (object), and can become a suitable vessel for practicing the yoga of mantra deities, etc., there are many necessities, so focusing on the body of the deity is best. The method is: from the heart of the guru deity above one's head, emit (rays of light) like a string of beads, at the end of which, on a seat of various lotuses and moons, visualize Shakyamuni Buddha with a color like molten gold, starting from "seated in the vajra posture," visualize him as small as a barley grain, residing in the sky in front of one's navel, and meditate with single-pointed concentration. Or, from the guru deity above one's head, like one lamp dividing into two, a second guru appears and merges into oneself, on a high and vast precious throne supported by eight great lions, on a seat of various lotuses, moons, and suns, one becomes Shakyamuni Buddha, starting from "seated in the vajra posture," focus single-pointedly and meditate on the (Buddha's body) that appears like a rainbow in the sky, without inherent existence. At that time, one should abandon attachment to meditating on the yellow (Buddha's body).

If visions of red and other colors appear, or if the posture of standing appears when one wishes to meditate on the sitting posture, or if multiple visions appear when one wishes to meditate on one, etc., do not follow these, but rather focus single-mindedly on the root object of focus and meditate. Even if the clear, luminous nature of clear light does not arise from the beginning, focus single-mindedly on the roughly half-clear part of the body and meditate. Moreover, one should ensure that no dullness or agitation arises at all during this session. If they do arise, one should immediately recognize them and generate a strong desire to abandon them, then focus single-mindedly on the object of focus, not forgetting it, but simply remembering it again and again. Maintaining the continuity of that mind is the supreme method for beginners to accomplish calm abiding. In short, if one meditates on a pure samadhi, as it is said, "Abandon the five faults, rely on the eight antidotes, arising from causes." Therefore, it is necessary to accomplish it by relying on the eight antidotes that counteract the five faults. That is, when engaging in samadhi, laziness is a fault, so there are four antidotes: faith in seeing the qualities of samadhi, the desire to seek samadhi, diligent effort in samadhi, and the result of effort—pliancy. When diligently practicing samadhi, forgetting the instructions is a fault, so the antidote is mindfulness. However, it is not enough to merely not forget the object of focus; one must also focus single-mindedly on the object of focus and possess unwavering certainty that makes awareness powerful. When abiding in samadhi, dullness and agitation are two faults, so the antidote is clear comprehension. That is, through clear comprehension, one carefully examines whether dullness and agitation arise or not. Superior individuals recognize and abandon dullness and agitation when they begin to arise, intermediate individuals recognize them immediately after they arise, and inferior individuals must also recognize and abandon dullness and agitation soon after they arise. So, what is the difference between drowsiness and dullness and agitation? The state where the object of focus is unclear and the body and mind are heavy is drowsiness, like darkness descending on the mind, although the mind does not wander away from the object of focus, it lacks clarity and bright
