Now, just enduring putting one's hand into a burning fire for a moment, or staying naked for a night in the cold winter, or staying without any food for a day, or even just being bitten by mosquitoes and the like on the body is difficult to bear. How much more so the suffering of the hot and cold hells, the hungry ghosts, and the animals, where one devours another alive. Thinking, 'How could I possibly bear these?' and comparing it to my present experience, meditate until a transformation of mind arises with great fear and dread. Therefore, I should, at this time when I have obtained the excellent support of leisure and opportunity, abandon the causes of bad migrations and strive for the causes of good migrations, and thus strive for a way not to be born in the bad migrations. How should I strive for a way not to be born in the bad migrations? As explained above, fear the suffering of the bad migrations, and knowing that the Three Jewels have the power to protect from that fear, take refuge in the Three Precious Jewels from the depths of my heart. The Three Jewels do indeed have the power to protect from the fear of the bad migrations. The Buddha Jewel himself is liberated from all fears, and is skilled in the means of protecting others from all fears, engages with great compassion towards all, without near or far, and works for the benefit of all, whether they have helped or not, and is therefore worthy of refuge. He can also represent the Dharma and the Sangha. Therefore, the teachers, teachings, and communities of outsiders do not have these qualities, and are therefore not worthy of refuge. The Three Jewels have these qualities, and are therefore worthy of refuge. How to take refuge? To the supreme Buddha among bipeds, I go for refuge! Please be my teacher who liberates me from the suffering of samsara and the bad migrations! To the supreme Dharma among the passionless, I go for refuge! Please be my actual protector who liberates me from the fear of samsara and the bad migrations! To the supreme Sangha among assemblies, I go for refuge! Please be my companion who liberates me from the suffering of samsara and the bad migrations! Thus, from the depths of my heart, with unwavering conviction, take refuge. Having taken refuge in this way, if one does not train in what should be trained, the refuge will degenerate, so one must train in what should be trained. That is, if I have taken refuge in the Buddha, then

Do not take refuge in fierce deities such as Khyungjuk (Vishnu) and others to rely on. Even for the Buddha's image, one should regard it as the actual Buddha and treat it with respect. Having taken refuge in the Dharma, one should not harm sentient beings. Even for a single letter, one should abandon disrespect and treat it with reverence. Having taken refuge in the Sangha Jewel, one should not associate with non-Buddhists or negative companions. Even for those who are not wearing monastic robes, one should abandon disrespect and treat them with reverence. Furthermore, one should recognize that all benefits, happiness, and goodness are due to the kindness of the Three Jewels, and offer food and drink to the Three Jewels. All immediate and future matters should be done by praying to the Three Jewels, and not relying on ordinary diviners or sorcerers. One should use whatever abilities one has to lead other sentient beings to take refuge in the Three Jewels. Even for the sake of one's life, one should not abandon the Three Jewels, and one should strive to ensure that not even a single word of abandoning the Three Jewels is uttered. One should think in this way, and contemplate three times during the day and three times during the night. By knowing the qualities, knowing the distinctions, and vowing not to speak otherwise, one should take refuge with firm determination, contemplating three times during the day and three times during the night. Now, although taking refuge in the Three Jewels can save one from the suffering of the lower realms, how does one accomplish the world of higher realms? In this regard, one should contemplate the results of black and white karma, ascertain the distinction between virtuous and non-virtuous actions, and contemplate the principles of great increase, that uncreated actions will not be encountered, and that created actions will not be wasted. One should properly adopt virtue and abandon non-virtue. However, this cannot be determined by the power of direct perception. As it is said in the Samadhiraja Sutra: "The moon and stars will fall together, mountains and towns will be destroyed together, the realm of space will transform, but you will not speak untruthful words." One should develop deep faith in the words of the Buddha. It is also said: "Suffering arises from non-virtue, how to definitely liberate from it? Day and night constantly, I should only contemplate this." And it is also said: "The root of all virtuous aspects, the Buddha taught as aspiration. The root of that is always, contemplating the ripening fruit." Thus, in general, one should abandon all non-virtue, especially the non-virtue of body, speech, and mind.
