RA. The individual indicated here should be understood as the lowest type. Generally, the small individual may only have the intention to pursue the interests of this life, but here, it is necessary to enter the path of higher rebirth without error. Therefore, no other distinction is made for the small individual mentioned here other than uniqueness. The root of all paths of the three types of individuals is the way to rely on a spiritual friend. By pleasing the spiritual friend, the desire to extract the essence from leisure and opportunity arises. If the mind of wanting to extract the essence from the basis of leisure or wanting to practice Dharma does not arise, then none of the three types of individuals can be practiced. Therefore, relying on a spiritual friend and the Dharma related to leisure and opportunity are the preliminaries for all three. Therefore, when practicing the instructions, the order of relying on a spiritual friend, etc., should be followed in a certain order. Furthermore, to generate the thought of a small individual, one needs to contemplate impermanence and the faults of the three lower realms. In practicing the application, one needs to take refuge and contemplate the law of karma, and then train in the discipline of abandoning the ten non-virtuous actions. Therefore, the actual practice of the path of the small individual mentioned here has four objects of focus. Secondly, the characteristic of the intermediate individual is that, having contemplated the suffering of all samsara from Avici hell to the peak of existence through various reasons, there is no desire even in dreams for the happiness of a universal monarch, etc. Turning one's back on all the happiness of existence and turning away from attachment is the difference in thought. Being motivated by that thought, abiding correctly in the conduct of any of the seven classes of individual liberation vows, which are characterized by turning away from sinful and non-virtuous actions of body, speech, and mind, is the difference in action. Any individual who possesses both thought and action, seeking only nirvana, the complete pacification of all suffering, is the difference in result. Possessing these three differences means entering the path of the undefiled supreme Dharma. Therefore, it is the intermediate individual mentioned here. Because of turning away from all existence, it is superior to the small individual, and because it does not possess the higher intention of bearing the burden of benefiting sentient beings, it is inferior to the great individual. Therefore, it is called the intermediate individual. If the intermediate individual actually mentioned here is classified, from the perspective of vehicle, there are two types: the Hearer vehicle and the Solitary Realizer vehicle.

Through the method of meditation, one meditates on the Four Noble Truths and the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination in both forward and reverse order. From the internal aspect, with the mind seeking liberation for one's own benefit, learning the ten virtuous actions is the lowest of the middling person. Meditating on the Four Noble Truths with that intention is the middling of the middling. Whoever possesses that intention and meditates on the selflessness of the two emptinesses is the great one of the middling. Therefore, those who follow the noble Nagarjuna and glorious Chandrakirti can also be distinguished into three through the meditation on the three selflessnesses: the selflessness of the person, which is merely the emptiness of a substantial self; the selflessness of phenomena, which is the emptiness of external objects that are aggregates of indivisible particles; and the subtle selflessness, which is the emptiness of inherent existence, where persons and phenomena are merely imputed by conceptual thought. Those who realize and meditate on these are the three types of individuals of the Lesser Vehicle. The actual basis of the path of the middling person is: "Turning one's back on the happiness of existence," which indicates the Truth of Suffering; "From sinful actions," which indicates the Truth of Origin; "Seeking only one's own peace," which indicates the Truth of Cessation; and "The nature of cessation itself," which indicates the Truth of the Path. As Sharawa said, the path of the Four Noble Truths is the main object of meditation for those who desire liberation and is the foundation of the path of the middling person, because the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination are also included within it. Furthermore, those who seek liberation need to determine what to adopt and abandon, namely the two categories of accumulation and purification. The former requires determining the cause that binds, which is the Truth of Origin, and the result that is bound, which is the Truth of Suffering. The latter requires determining what is to be attained, which is the Truth of Cessation, and the method of attainment, which is the Truth of the Path. The order is also as the Truth of Suffering is spoken of first, those who seek liberation should first contemplate well the general and specific faults of samsara, thereby generating a genuine mind of liberation. When one becomes weary from contemplating the suffering of samsara, one will think about what the cause of samsara is. Therefore, when one sees that samsara is accomplished by afflictions and contaminated actions, one will generate the desire to abandon the Truth of Origin. After that, one meditates on the order of engagement of the Truth of Origin in samsara. The main factor of the Truth of Origin is ignorance, which is the inverted engagement with the nature of objects.
