Collected without omission. Explaining the Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment has two parts: the branches of what is to be explained, and the meaning of the actual instruction. The first is that the scholars of Vikramashila, in order to show the purity of the source of the Dharma, explained the greatness of the author; in order to generate respect for the key instructions, they explained the greatness of the Dharma; and they considered it essential to first explain how to listen to and teach the Dharma that possesses these two greatnesses. Here, too, I will explain a little. First, the author of this text is the Bodhisattva of the Good Aeon, who intentionally took birth in a great royal family in the land of Zahor. He knew the three baskets extensively, possessing the qualities of learning, and having practiced them properly, he attained all the qualities of realization. At the Vajra Throne, the Great Bodhi Temple, he defeated the evil doctrines of the non-Buddhists three times with the Dharma, and he performed great deeds for the Buddha's teachings in both India and Tibet. In particular, after arriving in Tibet, he turned countless wheels of Dharma, both profound and vast. By composing this text and other means, he re-established the traditions of the Buddha's teachings that had declined, and clarified those that still existed, thus leading all beings, directly and indirectly, to the unmistaken path of higher rebirth and definite goodness. This great pandita is known as Lord Atisha, the glorious and fortunate. As the eighty-verse eulogy of Nagtso Lotsawa says: 'If Lord Jowo had not come to Tibet, all would have been like the blind. Because you, with your vast knowledge, have come, the sun of wisdom has risen in Tibet.' Secondly, the greatness of the Dharma is that it gathers the essence of all the scriptures of the Sage, the sole lamp of the three realms; the tradition of the two great chariots; the key instructions of the confluence of the three rivers of transmission; the great path of higher rebirth and definite goodness; the key to all the sutras and commentaries; the footprints of all the scholars and accomplished ones of India and Tibet; and the text that reveals, completely and without omission, what the three types of individuals should practice, called the Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment. It summarizes the essential points of both sutra and tantra, thus completely encompassing the subject matter. It mainly teaches the stages of taming sentient beings, making it easy to put into practice, and it is skilled in the traditions of the two great chariots.

因为两位上师的教诲所庄严,所以比其他法类更为殊胜。第三,对于具有两大殊胜的法,如何听闻和讲说的规矩是:听闻的规矩、讲说的规矩、最后共同如何做的规矩等,要像《菩提道次第》的引导文中所说的那样了解。第二,实际教诲的内容有四:名称的意义、翻译的礼敬、正文的意义。第一是:在印度圣地有四大语言,其中在梵语中,此论的名称为菩提 Patha Pradīpa(梵文天城体:बोध पाथा प्रदिप,梵文罗马拟音:Bodhi Patha Pradīpa,汉语字面意思:菩提道灯),在藏语中,翻译为《菩提道灯》。

Because it is adorned with the teachings of the two great masters, it is more excellent than other Dharma classes. Third, the rules for listening to and speaking about the Dharma that possesses two great excellences are: the rules for listening, the rules for speaking, and the rules for how to do it together at the end, etc., which should be understood as stated in the guiding texts of the "Stages of the Path to Enlightenment." Second, the actual content of the teachings has four parts: the meaning of the title, the salutation of translation, and the meaning of the text. First: In the sacred land of India, there are four major languages. Among them, in Sanskrit, the title of this treatise is Bodhi Patha Pradīpa, which is translated into Tibetan as "Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment." Among them, Bodhi is enlightenment, Patha is path, and Pradīpa is lamp. Therefore, the wisdom of the Buddha, who has attained the ultimate nature of abandonment and realization, is to purify all the two obscurations and their habitual tendencies without remainder, and to realize all the phenomena of suchness and allness without remainder, so it is enlightenment; eliminating the obstacles on the path to enlightenment, that is, the darkness of misunderstanding, wrong understanding, and doubt, thereby revealing the nature of the ten grounds and five paths, so it is a treatise, called a lamp. Thus, mentioning the Indian language at the beginning of translating the treatise is to understand the purity of the source of the Dharma, and to generate gratitude and appreciation for the translators, kings, and ministers, and to leave habitual tendencies in Sanskrit, etc. Second, the salutation of translation is: Before the translator translates, he prostrates to the Bodhisattva Manjushri. This treatise is generally an explanation of all the Buddha's words, but it is mainly written for the sake of the Abhisamaya-alamkara of the Great Vehicle and the ultimate translation, etc. Third, the meaning of the text has three parts: praising and vowing to declare, declaring the text, and relying on what cause to write. The first is: At the beginning of composing the treatise, the object of prostration is: all the Buddhas of the ten directions and three times, who have destroyed the evil Dharma, and have completely won from the evil consequences of the demonic armies; and their Dharma, that is, the collection of the Buddha's words, the sutras; and the practice of the Buddha's words, the Dharma of practice.
