Therefore, having gained faith through understanding in those manifest and realizable Dharmas, as well as the objects of refuge and virtuous deeds, and because of longing for them but being unable to differentiate, it is the Sangha, namely the eight abodes, as well as the solitary Buddhas and those abiding on the Bodhisattva grounds. To those objects, with body, speech, and mind led by the heart that sees the qualities of the refuge, I prostrate with great reverence. By doing so, obstacles and hindrances are pacified, so that the writing may be completed, and it is in accordance with the conduct of noble saints, and it is also for the sake of teaching us followers to practice. Having prostrated in this way, what should be done? Something special should be done. That is, as the protector of the entire Tibetan Buddhist teachings, born into the lineage of the Dharma King Bodhicitta, as the support of the Sangha, with unwavering faith in the Three Jewels, with vast wisdom eyes for the Sutras and Tantras, invited by Jowo Atisha with many hardships, his own disciple who pleased him with all the things that pleased his heart, Lha Lama Jangchub Ö, who possesses excellent good intention, reported that because many seemingly correct but actually confused phenomena have occurred in the Tibetan Buddhist teachings, what beneficial things are needed for the entire Buddhist teachings now, and so on. Therefore, he requested the Lama himself to compose a treatise that contains all the essence of the Great Vehicle, is concise in words and condensed in meaning, and is how the Lama himself practices. Therefore, in order to universally illuminate the path to attaining unsurpassed Bodhi, a treatise like a lamp should be explained very clearly. Thus, the vow to explain this "Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment" is for the sake of completing the writing. Second, regarding the actual explanation of the main text, it is divided into two parts: briefly explaining the nature of the three types of individuals, and explaining the characteristics of their paths separately. The first part is: above it was said that the "Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment" should be clearly explained, so what is the Bodhi path like? In general, the term "individual" refers to all sentient beings, but here the Sanskrit word for individual is "Purusha" (पुरुषा,puruṣa), which means to be able to act or have the ability. Therefore, because it has the ability to accomplish the benefits of future lives and even ultimate benefit, it is called an individual. And, because it uses the mind more to discern what to accept and reject in future lives and even ultimately, it is also called a person. As for those who only strive for the benefit of this life,

Here, the term "person" or "individual" does not refer to an ordinary person. As stated in the Vinaya: "Fearing the lower realms in the future, abandon sins; remembering the faults of samsara, desiring liberation, engage in the three trainings; fearing the terrors of the lesser vehicle, cultivate the mind of enlightenment. Such is the conduct of a person; otherwise, what is it that is not?" As it is said. The path to unsurpassed enlightenment has three aspects: the path of higher rebirth for the small individual, the common path of definite goodness for the intermediate individual, and the path of the Buddha himself, which is supreme. Therefore, the path of the three types of individuals should also be understood as threefold. These should also be made very clear and easy to understand through the characteristics that represent their own nature. The distinctions should be written by showing the nature and differences of the three paths in different ways. Here, as an incidental point, a brief summary of the general classification of the path will be explained. All Buddhas initially generate the mind of enlightenment, accumulate merit in the middle, and finally attain perfect and complete enlightenment, all for the sake of sentient beings. Therefore, all the teachings are also to accomplish only the benefit of sentient beings. Thus, there are two purposes to be accomplished for sentient beings: temporary higher rebirth and ultimate definite goodness. Among these, starting from the first practice, all that is taught is included in the Dharma category of the small individual and the common individual. The special small individual does not focus much on this life, but strives for the perfection of higher realms in the next life, and engages in its causes. Definite goodness has two aspects: liberation from samsara alone, and omniscience. Among these, starting from the Hearer and Solitary Realizer vehicles, all that is taught is included in the Dharma category of the intermediate individual or that which is common to them. The intermediate individual becomes weary of all existence and attains liberation from existence for his own benefit, and therefore engages in the three trainings. There are two methods for accomplishing omniscience: the Paramita Vehicle and the Mantra Mahayana. These two are included in the Dharma category of the great individual. The great individual, being under the influence of great compassion, is for the sake of exhausting all the suffering of sentient beings.
