Therefore, one must definitely take the vows of entering through effort. Second, how to take the vows of entering, there are three points: what is the basis for taking, from where is the object of taking, and how is the ritual of taking. First, from the layperson to the monk's seven vows of individual liberation, or the vows of always abandoning faults of the same nature as this, and the vows of life-long vows, those who have these supports have the qualification of the Bodhisattva vows. Apart from that, the complete Bodhisattva vows will not arise. Because the Bodhisattva vows are able to benefit others through direct or indirect means, therefore it must be eliminated from the root of harming others. If the vows of individual liberation are abandoned due to death, then how can this support be possible? The great yogi said: The old man relies on a cane to stand up, and later the cane does not fall, because the old man holds the cane from the head. First, the basis of arising is the vows of individual liberation, and then from the root of harming others, it is not abandoned until the Bodhicitta, this is the function of the Bodhisattva vows. If one abides in the support of the seven vows of individual liberation, is there a difference between good and bad? The Moon Lamp Sutra says: Among the three, the monk is the most superior. And so on. So, when a person with individual liberation vows takes the Bodhisattva vows, will the precepts change? Is it both? The Black Commentary says: Are these two the same vows or different vows? It is the same and it is different. Like this, the behavior of the vows of precepts and so on are not found elsewhere. Abiding in any of the seven vows of individual liberation is the precept of the vows, therefore it is the same. It is also different, the vows of individual liberation are considered to be real, from harming others to not harming, the Bodhisattva vows are not considered to be real, it is only to accomplish the benefit of others, therefore it is also different. That's what it says. Second, the object from which to take is: the Bodhisattva's ritual of vows, skillful in taking correctly, guarding without losing, if lost, there is a way to make up for it, having complete wisdom, and oneself is the Bodhisattva's precepts complete.

And abiding in perfection, and possessing the merit or courage to be able to bestow the bodhisattva vows, and possessing a compassionate mind. One who possesses these four qualities should be known as a good lama. Among these, the first two are the most important, according to Zhang Rom and others. Third, the ritual of how to receive them is twofold: the ritual with a lama and the ritual without a lama. The first is: according to the ritual spoken of in the chapter on ethics in the Bodhisattvabhumi composed by the noble Asanga, one receives the vows of entering from that good lama who possesses the true and perfect qualities, through the complete means of preparation, main part, and conclusion. That is, the seven of making requests, generating joy, accumulating collections, urging, generating a special mind, asking about common obstacles, and briefly stating the precepts are the preparation. Taking the precepts three times before the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions and three times is the main part. And the five of asking for knowledge, the benefit of the entering of the sight of wisdom, not boasting of having received the vows, briefly stating the precepts, and offering thanks are the concluding ritual. Second, the ritual without a lama is twofold: committing to explain according to the scriptures in terms of general and specific, and showing how to generate the mind of enlightenment and how to keep the vows that come from that sutra. The first is: as it is said in the sutras that one should take the vows from such a qualified lama, but if one searches very diligently, but due to the circumstances of time and place, if one cannot find such a lama at all, what should one do? Other than having a lama, there is a special way to take them oneself, that is, the ritual of receiving vows without a lama, as it is said in the scriptures, so here too it should be truly explained. Having thus generally made the commitment to explain, if one asks from which scripture it is explained, the answer is: in the past, countless eons ago, Manjushri, the wheel-turning king Āmbarāja te (梵文:Āmbarāja te), became a king named Namkha, and before the Tathagata Dundubhisvararāja (梵文:Dundubhisvararāja), he asked how to generate the mind of unsurpassed enlightenment. The adornment of the Buddha-field of Manjushri
