Like me, not knowing when I will die, and with many causes of death, thinking about when I will die, that is, practicing with the three perfections of preliminary, main practice, and conclusion. Fifteenth instruction. Then, contemplating the nature of conditioned phenomena, which is impermanence. In general, conditioned phenomena are impermanent. In particular, the life of a person is impermanent. Especially, the basis of the aggregation of body and mind is impermanent. For example, cities and monasteries that were once flourishing and prosperous are now ruined and empty. One's own body is like a city, and the mind is like a person. Thinking about when it will become empty, from the depths of one's heart, practice with the three perfections of preliminary, main practice, and conclusion. Sixteenth instruction. Then, contemplating the causes of death, which is impermanence. For example, a burning butter lamp quickly burns out and is impermanent, just as it is suddenly blown out by the wind and dies in an instant. Having been born, one is heading towards death. If suddenly there is a cause of untimely death such as illness, demons, or violent harm, then there is no power to remain even for an instant. Thinking, will such a thing happen to me too? It is uncertain. Practice with the three: preliminary generation of bodhicitta, main practice contemplating that very thing, and conclusion dedication. Seventeenth instruction. Then, contemplating going alone, which is impermanence. Abandoning the appearances of this world, entering the path of the next life, lying on the final bed, using the final food and clothing, when speaking the final words, leaving behind all retinues, possessions, relatives, relationships, etc., the time will come when one must go alone, which is very difficult to endure. Thinking, will such a thing happen to me too? It is uncertain. Practice with the three perfections of preliminary, main practice, and conclusion. Eighteenth instruction. Then, contemplating the people of the times, which is impermanence. Like this, all the sentient beings, such as people and livestock, who died a hundred years ago, are not here now. Most of the sentient beings on earth now will also be gone in a hundred years. I cannot transcend that nature, and future beings will be the same. Aging like changing the calendar of the times. Thinking about how the family, neighbors, friends, relatives, domestic dogs, livestock, enemies, haters, companions, siblings, etc., of the place where I was born are no longer there, practice with the three perfections of preliminary, main practice, and conclusion.
