All naturally subside. The one hundred and nineteenth instruction. Then, how to hold the mind: The preliminary practice is the same as before. The main practice is to place a representation in front, such as a painted image, a book, a stupa, or a small branch. Without letting the mind wander, keep the eyes fixed and unmoving, gazing at it. At that time, whatever sounds, smells, or thoughts arise, completely cut them off and abandon them. Then, look very intently at the object of focus. Then, if the mind stays focused on one point, clearly see its form from the eyes, and meditate with the mind focused on that one point. If it wanders, open your eyes and look at the object. By doing this, you will give rise to shamatha, where the mind holds one-pointedly to the five sense objects of the five senses and the objects of the mind. The one hundred and twentieth instruction. Then, incidentally, train in the same way with sound as the object. The preliminary practice is the same. The main practice is to meditate without letting the ears wander, focusing on sounds such as human voices, wind sounds, and dog barks. Then, bring its form to mind, look inward, abandon the act of listening to the actual sound, and meditate. By alternating between these two, you will become skilled at holding the mind on sound. Similarly, apply this to smells, tastes, and tactile sensations, and practice accordingly. In this way, later, during meditation, the five senses will not cause harm but will become helpful. This is a very important key point. The one hundred and twenty-first instruction. Then, how to train with dharmas: Perform the preliminary practice as before. The main practice is to remain without distraction in the state of visualizing oneself as a deity. When you have become skilled at one-pointedness, change the object of focus and meditate on the radiating and gathering of light rays for the benefit of sentient beings, or meditate on sentient beings with the four immeasurables such as loving-kindness. Recognize that state of one-pointedness of mind and do not let it wander. By practicing these two alternately, you will give rise to shamatha, where the mind is freed from distraction and skilled at holding the mind in a state of equanimity. This is a very important key point. Through these key points, the arising of shamatha will be accomplished without obstacles. The one hundred and twenty-second instruction. Then, how to generate vipassanā: There are two aspects. The outer aspect of grasping is to remain in a state of equanimity, without an object, like the sky. The preliminary practice is as before. The main practice is as follows: All the various objects that appear are like dreams and illusions. If analyzed, they cannot even be established as indivisible particles, so they are empty. Understanding the appearance of objects as grasping
